*ETA: rebuttal!!!!
I'm a liberal and shut the frick up

The violent rioters at UC Berkeley are representative of a phenomenon I and other actual liberals call the “regressive left.” The regressive left doesn’t truly stand for liberty. Instead, they stand for the idea that anyone that says anything which offends them or doesn’t fit their narrative can and should be silenced.
This regressive mindset is not only wrong, it is incredibly dangerous. A healthy public debate of ideas never silences anyone who wishes to engage in an open and honest dialogue about important issues.

When Milo is faced with a tantrum from a protester who disrupts his events, he mercilessly mocks them to no end. However, and this is crucial to my view of Yiannopoulos, when faced with a respectful challenge to his ideas, he’s extremely polite and gives very well thought out answers to genuine questions from liberals.
This is what public discourse between people who disagree is supposed to look like. It’s not supposed to look like the absolute temper tantrum that many regressive leftists throw at his events.

I'm a liberal and shut the frick up
quote:
You probably think you’re being “true” to the notions of tolerance and acceptance that the left ostensibly stands for, but you’re less Sorkin hero and more D&D rules lawyer trying to argue with the DM and derailing the entire game night so that you can feel like you won a debate that no one but your ego benefits from.
There is nothing to be gained from helping you master-debate yourself. Your arguments aren’t worth engaging in when you’re so hyperfixated on the act of debate itself that you have zero interest in the realities of what you’re asking for and how they might affect other people. The only response I have for you is you’re being a petty little turd baby and need to Shut The frick Up.

I think the more moderate liberals are slowly but surely coming around.
The Democratic party needs actual reasonable leadership but that's a long shot

And lastly, I want all the regressives to know that their childish antics will not be tolerated. To each and every one of you that would even think to engage in the kind of behavior that took place at UC Berkeley, or who calls their political opponents neo-Nazis in a pathetic attempt to slander them with false, ad hominem attacks which harken back to the tactics of McCarthyism. You are the shame of the progressive movement and could not be more antithetical to true liberalism.
Learn to make actual arguments or get out of the debate hall. Right now, with this country in the state that it’s in, we adults don’t have time for your tantrums.

First the H1B story, now this. Is it opposite day or something at Huffpo?
On a more serious note, I never did understand proggies wanting to completely shut down debate. If Milo is as big of a racist, white supremacist, bigot (lol) as they maintain...why would they not want him speaking as much in public as possible so people see what he's really like?
Just as I want the SJW proggies to have all the public face time they can get so the public understands just how vile and intolerant they are.

it's just a tactic to silence opposition

this has always been my philosophy. in fact i almost made a big thread about it
basically, if you want to marginalize bad, extremist views that oppose your own, you want them out in the open making a fool of themselves. if you push them into the shadows, they will naturally grow as a clandestine movement that reinforces it's just fighting the crazy, outside world. think of it like cults. i don't think this is an intentional aim of the progs, but it's what happens in reality.

Well, let me rephrase that to "I never did understand proggies who weren't' just power hungry little fascists wanting to completely shut down debate."

The majority of the left and right agree with this person. It's the extremist idiots that are causing the issues here. It's a shame that whenever people try to have a real conversation, the moderates always get lumped in with the extremists.

this made me go look up the stance of the ACLU, which was refreshing
quote:
Many universities, under pressure to respond to the concerns of those who are the objects of hate, have adopted codes or policies prohibiting speech that offends any group based on race, gender, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation.
That's the wrong response, well-meaning or not. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution protects speech no matter how offensive its content. Speech codes adopted by government-financed state colleges and universities amount to government censorship, in violation of the Constitution. And the ACLU believes that all campuses should adhere to First Amendment principles because academic freedom is a bedrock of education in a free society.
How much we value the right of free speech is put to its severest test when the speaker is someone we disagree with most. Speech that deeply offends our morality or is hostile to our way of life warrants the same constitutional protection as other speech because the right of free speech is indivisible: When one of us is denied this right, all of us are denied. Since its founding in 1920, the ACLU has fought for the free expression of all ideas, popular or unpopular. That's the constitutional mandate.

It is because the extremists are the loudest and it never seems as if they get chastised by their own side.
That causes an appearance of tacit support.

I’m A Liberal
From the 60 and 70 era. Those guys never bothered me. Eh, so me and the boys on the right lost an election, no big deal, nothing changes too much, we'll get em next time.
Today is a whole different animal with those associated with liberalism though, imo.

I think it is imperative that people learn the difference between leftism and liberalism. Dave Rubin and liberals like him are important to have on our side on these issues.

I'm truly shocked that this was posted to Huffpo.
