I'll make it real easy for you (although the situations are more numerous and complex than this). If someone has been here for, say, two or three years (arbitrary . . . we can come up with a longer or shorter time), is working, contributing, paying taxes . . . I'm not all that keen to deport them. Shit, there are probably a thousand Irish bartenders in NYC who are technically illegal. Several hundred, at least, Asians in the New Orleans metro area who don't have all their papers in order. All of these people ended up here in different ways. Some came legally but their papers expired.
The people who are so rabidly against amnesty based upon anything firsthand tend to be the people in the Southwest dealing with an avalanche of Latino immigrants. The rest of the anti-amnesty people I run into tend to be stick up the butt nativist right wingers who just don't cotton to the idea even in the abstract.
