I was 23 years old and in graduate school. I had no full time job and no insurance. I was working nights and going to school during the day. Then I would sleep 4 hours and go to my night job. I got my girlfriend pregnant. Neither of us had health insurance and I had no way to pay for it. We signed up for Medicaid so our daughter could be born. We signed up for WIC so we could get milk and baby food when she was born. We needed help bad. She was born and it didn't cost a thing thank God, because I didn't have a pot to piss in. I didn't get food stamps, or section 8 or whatever else is available. I'm sure I qualified.

2 years later I graduated with my Masters and became a full time employee. We got off of Medicaid and I started repaying a debt that I will forever be grateful for. That helping hand to get me to graduation changed my life. I started paying taxes and have done so for the last 20+ years. By my simple math calculation I've repaid almost $750,000.

I'm 1000% for a helping hand. What I'm against is a lifestyle of welfare and "gimme".

Intelligent people are capable of not abusing handouts. Not really a shocker

You are a good example of the difference between a "hand out" and a "hand up." Congrats!

Is your experience the basis for your screen name?

Welfare isn't in the purview of the government period. Churches and other humanitarian organizations should be responsible for helping those making poor life choices i.e. Getting girlfriend pregnant while poor and going to graduate school with no source of income.

I was lucky to have a decent pair of flip flops. I had joined the Army to get my college paid for. That's how broke I was. And guess what? It worked!

Ive yet to meet anyone that doesnt agree with the concept of welfare as a means to help someone who wants to work hard make the step to become a productive member of society. Almost everyone disagrees with welfare as a permanent system to be abused by lazy pieces of shite.

The question is how to successfully execute the former.

Yeah where is that dude who was saying I was privileged because my parents had money and left me a little? I didn't have anything early on. I made my own way in life.

I would bet no more than 25% of welfare recipients share a similar story.

Congrats. I agree that you all are what's right about welfare. But remember there are some who still think you didn't deserve a dime since you got your GF pregnant and they will say you made bad choices that they should not have paid for.

In all honesty a majority of people on welfare do get off of welfare if you look at the statistics. The lifestyle does happen, but it's not as big as others say.

Sorry, but others should not be coerced to subsidize your food, housing, kids and education even if you put it to good use, which is not the norm. We now have a nation of snowflakes drowning in student loan debt who are not qualified to do anything except pour a cup of offer.

Exactly what its intended for. Those who fall on hard times and need a bridge to get over it.

I had much the same story. Wife pregnant while we are both in grad school. Medicaid paid for the delivery and doctors appointments and we got WIC vouchers. If I recall correctly we only qualified because our stipends didn't count as income. Today we both have good jobs, are homeowners and my insurance from work will be paying for the next baby's delivery.

You are exactly the problem.

If you aren't responsible to have a kid, use fricking protection.

Glad to hear you knocked up a welfare queen.

I'm not that harsh, but broke people getting pregnant appears to be the number 1 gripe from people around here.

BTW, exactly how different does the op think his situation is from everyone else on welfare?
