How the Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 Situation Plays Out

President Obama will continue to insist on a "full investigation" and push back on any criticism by stating "we can't act until we have all the facts." The investigation (whatever shape it takes) will get drawn out because access to the evidence (that hasn't already been destroyed) will be withheld/restricted by the Russians. Eventually, the investigation will stall/die a slow death and the Europeans (led by Germany) will say "we can't punish Russia because the investigation was inconclusive". President Obama will then use that lack of European resolve as an excuse to basically do nothing to Putin.

Meh.
The reality is Russia does whatever it wants. Nobody can or will punish them for it. And there are very few people in either party who are willing to go to war over the downed airliner.
I can see a few more sanctions but those will be ineffective.

Well, gee, I guess we should follow the advice of all you Paulistas and "non-interventionists" and basically do nothing. It's none of our business anyways. Historically, the US has been every bit the warmonger that Russia has been, so we really have no moral authority anyways.
Just let Putin do whatever he wants. After all, he's got a right to defend the interests of ethic Russians, well-established borders and international agreements be damned.
Perhaps father & son Paul can fly to Moscow, secure an agreement from Putin that he will not seize any more territory, and then give a press conference where they announce "Peace in our time!"

Well, they did win the cold war.
If only we had had a neverending string of dem presidents the cold war never would have ended and we probably would have sent them billions of dollars of aid by now.
When is hillary's reset button? Did that bitch take it with her when she left?
Posted on 7/19/14 at 2:48 pm to gthog61
she keeps one on her dildo, probably ...
truman and kennedy had just as much influence on the cold war as reagan ... so it wasn't just your party or their party that won the cold war ...
it's just funny to hear you guys think romney or a pub would've made putin their sniveling punk by now ... guess we could go in there and spend another trillion dollars, give halliburton another billion in profit, and waste another 5000 lives ... seems to have worked out well in other areas ... or maybe they could give a speech ...

Going to war because Russia downed an airliner so they can down a bunch of US jets would be dumb.
"Hey, you shot down another country's plane. We're going to fly hundreds of ours over your double digit SAMs..."

you didn't answer the question ...
what do you, as a republican/nonconservative, want the president and this government to do? ... what would you do? ... what should be done? ...
obama has asked for sanctions against russia ... europe will not sanction russia to any legit degree because they get 1/3 to 1/2 of their energy from russia ...
what should we do? ...

ain't no dem here, bucky ... just you and the other pubs playing the same game as the dems, bitching about the same things each other does when the other guy's in office ... still waiting on you red blooded muricans to tell the world what obama's doing wrong and what your boy mitty would've done differently, but ya'll can't ...

hayul yeya ... got to show them towel heads, camel jockeys and commies/russkies who's boss, gottdammit ... (not to mention the jobs from defense spending) ... got to send our boys over there to show 'em who's boss (just don't make it their son or friend - those are real bullets they're using!) ... jesus probably rode a camel, too, so my apologies to the christian right ...

Is this not happening with the current administration? Just exchange Halliburton for any one of various companies and Russia for...

The 80s called and they want their foreign policy back
It sounded cute

wouldn't say it's happening in the defense industry ... but there's plenty of crony capitalism in obama's administration ... lord only knows how much money that website for healthcare has really cost ... imagine each of us could've had at least 1/2 million, if not more ... course, his supporters are just as blind as those who clamor for romney ...

I have already laid out how I would respond in a prior thread...
Apparently, all you peaceniks believe there's no middle ground between all-out nuclear war and bending over for Putin and hoping he brings the lube.

There’s no way Obama even does anything close to this, but I would demand the following of Putin:
1. Putin must come clean immediately about the incident.
2. US investigators must have full access to the MH17 crash site and all debris/wreckage.
3. Russia must pay the following in reparations:
a. $20MM to the families of every passenger and crewmember on the flight
b. $2 Billion to Malaysian Airlines
c. $5 Billion to the Malaysian Government
NOTE: In addition to these reparations, Russia must pay all expenses related to the care of the remains of all who perished.
4. Ukrainian Policy
a. The “Separatists” must be disarmed immediately. Russia must confiscate all weapons and assets they’ve supplied to the Eastern Ukraine insurgents.
b. All Russian military and intelligence personnel must withdraw from Eastern Ukraine
If Putin does not agree to ALL the above terms, the US and NATO would do the following:
A. Full economic sanctions against all sectors of the Russian economy
B. An offer for Ukraine to join NATO
C. Delivery of weapons and other “lethal aid” to the Ukrainians
D. Send Military Advisors and/or Special Operations forces to the Ukraine to help train their forces and provide intelligence
E. Forward-deploy ground forces into Eastern Europe (I think the Poles and Czechs would welcome this). Also, re-establish the missile defense sites in Eastern Europe (time to burn that "reset" button).
I'm sure the resident Ron Paul fans will call me an evil warmonger, but the US and NATO must respond as strongly as possible to Putin. We should also heed the advice of Rahm Emanuel and "never let a crisis go to waste". In this case, let's take the opportunity to neuter Vladimir Putin on the world stage and reassert our influence and moral authority in Europe.
Apparently, all you peaceniks believe there's no middle ground between all-out nuclear war and bending over for Putin and hoping he brings the lube.
