Hiring / Not hiring fat people

Just looking for a few honest responses.

Considering that fat/overweight people show an obvious lack of self discipline and likely lethargy or laziness, ...

...should it be illegal/unethical to NOT hire people based on their weight?

And regardless of the answers, help me understand the Poli-board's definitions of what ethical/legal grounds for not hiring someone should be.

<I personally believe it should always be up to the proprietors to decide no matter what.>

I like freedom.

You should be able to hire/not hire whoever you want and for whatever reason you want.

They may be lazy or lethargic when it comes to their health, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they won't perform their jobs well.

That being said, the decision should be that of the potential employer.

As it pertains to their physical health.

If you have a sedentary job, I don't think it really matters.

I'm overweight and can outwork a lot of people in the office environment because of my intelligence.

That being said if someone wants to not hire me because I'm fat, their loss.

I'd say that there's a huge difference between "overweight" and "obese." An obese person will more than likely be a less effective worker unless you're looking for a webmaster. In a white collar atmosphere, being overweight is too much of a reality, and I don't think that being 20 lbs overweight is necessarily an indication of laziness. On the contrary, it could be an indication of being a workaholic. If he's at the office all the time putting in extra hours, that's less time to excercise, and therefore he's got a bit of a gut.

I actually agree in large part with this statement but it is articulated as if it is without exception, true. That just aint the case.

Illegal? No. It shouldn't be.

Unethical? Hmm. I guess I don't care enough about what another person does with property HE/SHE owns to have an opinion.

Should be two different threads. Ethical and Legal, while often intertwined, are not by definition so.

Would you settle for unwise? Hiring decisions based on stereotypes is a shortcut. It may be efficient, but it risks missing out on some good folks with bad eating habits that don't necessarily translate into workplace productivity.

you should be able to hire who you want if it is a private business, however if you do so based only on their BMI then you are a fool and your business probobly won't make it.

First off, this is a stupid premise.

Second, private employers should be able to hire/fire whoever they want for whatever reason they choose.

Hiring should be on the basis of what will help the company increase their profit.

I can't remember, but did the employer mandate part to the health care "reform" bill pass with the final legislation?

Because, let's put it this way. If I'm running a company that falls under the employer health insurance mandate, you can damn well bet I'm hiring only physically fit people, if possible.

You can hire whoever you choose.

If ALL things are equal (track record, education, past performance, qualifications, etc) and the only differenc is obesity versus fit...I say you may have a point.

However if you are taking a underqualified, unproven person on the premise that he is fit, versus a fat proven winner, with superb resume...well....you are probably silly.

I'm digging all these responses so far. I'm shocked that they align with my own views. Also, one guy said my statement about it seemingly without exception all fat people.... I do want to be clear, I know there are exceptions so I don't want it to seem like I'm unrealistic or obtuse. I realize there are some overweight people that work way harder and better than skinny people.

I'm speaking in generalities.

Skinny people promoted faster/further. Study 15 years ago from John Hopkins found that 80% of success can be attributed to "Likability" (Aesthetics, Personality)..not intelligence(IQ) (educational backgrounds being equal)

IMO for sales type jobs, team work environment, "Office Politics" type workplaces its better to hire skinnier people(likability), but if it a research/thinking/alone type positions that judge based on production/quality output, then the heavier should flourish in a being free from a judgmental type of flawed workplace/ flawed boss.

As a libertarian I have no restrictions at all on hiring discrimination. If you are the owner of a business you should be able to exclude:

blacks, whites, Asians, Mexicans, Slavs.
Tall people, short people, people too normal.
Women, Men, Bi-Sexuals, Homosexuals, Tri-Sexuals.
Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Muslims, Atheists.

The only protected class in hiring should be women with small waist lines and large tits.

When I was a manager I never hired smokers. They were hard to find too often - "Where's Greg?" "He's on a smoke break."
