I ran across this old snippet that my Grandfather wrote back in the 1960's when he was Superintendent of Schools in a district along the Oregon coast.

He espouses some old-fashioned ideas about kids and family that I don't think would fly, today. That last paragraph, especially, would give him some trouble, today.

That's genius level stuff right there. Your grandfather was a wise man.

Damn right. Life isn't always fair. Things won't always work out the way you want them to. Deal with it and move on.

The Left, supported fully by the Democrat Party, have changed the USA from what it was in your Grandfather's days.

For those of us that lived then that are living now, you hit the nail with a sledgehammer.

I can't disagree with ANYTHING he penned. They are the values that were instilled in me by my father, and my fathers father.

No nation will rise above its homes.

I found that clipping in a cigar box of nostalgic things that my mother gave me years ago. I think they originally gave it to me around Christmas time so as to lower my expectations of what I might find under the tree that year...

I wasn't sure where to post this clipping, but I felt like the PT was the place, because I wanted to show a little bit of how people's views have changed.

Sayings like, "Life isn't fair", "What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger", or, as Grandpa said, "A little frustration is goof for the soul", have no meaning today.

The left seems to want to remove that frustration and failure from everyone's life, so that everyone only knows success in their lives. We have to recognize that without feeling the pain of failure, success rings hollow.

My time (50-60's) these were the ideals I was taught. An imperfect life was led, but wisdom has proved these all to be truths.

Learn young men and women from this man's words.

I agree that those words are wise, I disagree that they are lost, I know a lot of parents, if not most that I know, that are teaching those same lessons. I don't believe that Americans are these terrible enfranchised souls that we believe.

Our kids are much more advanced than we ever were, and us adults don't make it any easier on them this day and age. Hard work and handling disappointment are great lessons, we also can do a better job of promoting other great values: understanding, patience, tolerance, generosity, faith and love for each other.

I think a lot of us conservatives often fall into the trap of believing that every social program is easy street.

I don't know that this is a trap. If you look at his words, he talks a about how a "child who has parents who love him and knows the security of a family", it won't matter if they don't have a lot, because that child "is difficult to injure".

We have exchanged the security of the family for a check from the government, and that, has facilitated the destruction of the family unit in America.

ETA: Obviously, many parents teach their kids the value of hard work and doing without. The key word you mentioned is "parents".

Great stuff and thanks for sharing. One small critique. Your grandfather was a tad bit "comma happy".

That's exactly how he would have sounded if he were talking.

If they are getting a govt check, did the family already go kaput?

Nope. If a family needs a hand, they need a hand. I'm talking about the generational welfare that we have in inner-cities and rural areas.

There are 3 things you can't do if you're a single mother on welfare and you want to stay on welfare: you can't get a job, get married, or save money. All three of those things run you the risk of losing all or part of your check.

I'm saying that welfare keeps single mothers from gettin married. The family isn't broken apart, it is not even an objective.

Didn't someone post an article on the PT suggesting that we should do away with families altogether, and let the government raise our children?

Your grandfather would not have a job in education today.
