Sorry. Hit enter too soon.

During his campaign, the formerly overwhelmingly popular Ahok made the mistake of stating that a verse in the Quran that forbids non-Muslim leaders of Muslims should not be used to persuade people to vote against him.

quote:

An Indonesian court has found Jakarta’s Christian governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama guilty of blasphemy and sentenced him to two years in prison, in a trial that is widely seen as a test of religious tolerance and pluralism in the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation. Purnama, better known by his nickname “Ahok”, was “found to have legitimately and convincingly conducted a criminal act of blasphemy, and because of that we have imposed two years of imprisonment,” head judge Dwiarso Budi Santiarto told the court.

I thought Indonesia was supposed to be moderate as far as Islam goes. Guess not.

Jackson is inhabited by morons, but I don't think they're imprisoning citizens for offending people. Yet.

I have no idea about the levels of piety, but I do know it has the largest Muslim population in the world. That may or may not help things. I don't know how much of their native religion/belief system they retained after being converted.

And we want more of them here. RE: Our country was founded on immigrants and we are a non-discriminating society. Send me your poor....

Wish Trump would never have backed off his original Muslim time-out.

Islam is a religion that relies on an earthly rule and has to force everyone to submit to it. It is a religion of Satan.

Right, but I've always heard that they weren't fanatics like many in the Middle East, for example.

Sadly, it is moderate. Until less than 20 years ago, people with Chinese ancestry were regularly subject to rape, beatings, and robbery. Now they can actually hold elected office. The government officially allows the practice of five different religions among the non-Muslim 15% of the country.

And then be locked away for years for an offhand comment about a Quran verse. That's about as moderate and tolerant as Islam gets in a Muslim country.

I have little knowledge of the Muslim population of Indonesia - but let's say they are generally poor without much hope for advancement in the world at large without becoming some kind of apostate. Given Islamic teachings, isn't it more attractive to become a holy warrior than a secular sell-out?

If the radicals have taught us anything, it's that you can do both.

Enjoy all the hedonism the west has to offer, then kill some Jews to atone for it.

Well that is by and large true. I know this difference is utterly meaningless for everyone on this board, but they aren't Salafis, nor is the predominant school Hanbali. East Asian Muslim countries are generally Shafi'i, and operate outside the purview of the Salafis, which is good. And which makes Indonesia many orders of magnitude less fanatic than the Salafis and Wahabis.

Even then, a large portion of the country is effectively non-denominational, and the pattern of practice appears to be like a buffet, where what is followed isn't as cogent as countries with top down religious institutions, like Islamist KSA and Iran.

In contrast, Indonesia was influenced by more secular thinkers (of a branch that was co-opted by the Salafis to great effect, called Islamic modernism) rather than the Wahabi and Deobindi movements that inspired other colonized Islamic countries. This Islamism came later, but after the country adopted what is essentially a secular constitution.

What I mean to say is that Indoensia and the East Asian Islamic countries are generally more moderate, but we have to realize the spectrum of discussion has shifted, and what moderate means in the Islamic context is different. Contrast this with the rash of murders in Pakistan based on the hearsay of blasphemy, and in that sad context, Indonesia does look more moderate.

So, just more proof that Muslims are intolerant of other people & not compatible with Western ideals. And yet, liberals continue to invite their own demise by encouraging these creatures to come here.

Wow, this is going to be very very controversial over there. Between Indonesia, Malaysia and that whole area, there will be upheaval if this does proceed. The governor of Jakarta is actually of Chinese origin, and a Christian, amazingly. He won the governorship on a platform against corruption and was very effective during his term. Of course, he was popular among many of the average citizenry as well as the minorities in the country, but he naturally made enemies among the more religious as well as the corrupt officials that populate the government there.

Even though he was wildly popular, he lost his re-election bid, in much part due to his religion and race. There were many different forces working against him and a lot of money poured in to defeat him.

What's interesting is that he is on very good terms with the former governor and current president Joko Widodo. Although, Jokowi has said he will not protect the governor, I think he did not think the judiciary would go so far as to jail the guy. It would send a very poor message as well as a precedent that would not be in the interest of the country.

Being a primarily Islamic country, there is a constant battle between secularists and those who are more religious. The country on the whole is moderate, but as always it seems, there is a strong and growing trend towards more fundamental teachings, in the schools, and slowly, in government.

This should be interesting as we've all seen the turn away from secularism in Turkey, it seems like it is also happening in most other Islamic countries, including Indonesia. Lets hope they get smart and don't let this happen.
