Government Run Hospitals A Solution?

What if we just created free government hospitals that would treat any US citizen? We could have doctors work there with their med school tuition fully paid for by the government, with the stipulation that they have to sign a contract to work in these hospitals for a certain amount of years at a lower salary. After their contract ends, they could go to a private company if they please, or they could stay in the public hospitals. Furthermore, in these hospitals, doctors could not be sued for malpractice and only generic prescriptions would be available. There would be a tax for everyone, but those who had private could write off a majority of it.
To me this would do a bunch of things:
-It would provide access to all citizens.
-It would allow private hospitals and insurance to continue existence.
-It would bring competition in prices to private companies/insurance.
-It would reward the best doctors who get offered jobs in private hospitals.
I know it's kind of different, but I feel like we need to think outside the box. Universal healthcare will not work in America, but I'm afraid we are heading there fast if we cannot come up with something that works for the majority of Americans.

Have you ever been inside a VA hospital? It is one of the most miserable places on earth. Anyone in favor of socialized medicine needs to spend a day in a VA.

Charity Hospital in New Orleans was much like that.

You mean like the VA? Great idea!!

Name three things the fed does well, efficiently and without waste?

I'm saying it could exist alongside private hospitals/insurance. Those who go there would get free treatment, so obviously it wouldn't be the best, but if they wanted better they could pay more and go with private insurance/hospitals.

When will people learn the federal gov fricks everything up

It exists along with private hospitals/insurance. I'm not saying everyone would have to go there. Those with private insurance wouldn't.

Can you name three things?

Why yes I have. Have you?
I would have to wholeheartedly disagree with your viewpoint. In my experience the level of care in the VA hospitals and clinics that I have been in is no worse than any average facility here in the US.

I'm not saying they would be great hospitals. I'm saying it could run as a free option on the side.

Actually the Louisiana Charity Hospital system was similar, but the state bailed soon as they could dump it on Feds.

Free isn't free. Just start a charity hospital.

I think we should just have a free clinic in every major city for very basic health care. Yeah you'd probably have to wait all day to get care but it beats the alternative.

I hear great things about the VA!
Here's exactly how things would go at your "free" hospital.
~Because it's "free" there's no price controls. Because the services will always be demanded, the governmental agency tasked with running the system will always claim to be underfunded.
~Because it's "free", idiots will go to the hospital for things like hangnails and diarrhea. Thus increasing wait times for emergency services.
~Although these hospitals are "free" to all Americans, it's overwhelmingly used by the poor because people of better means seek better care.
~Democrats proclaim that the poor are being underserved and are dying in the "free" hospital ERs.
~Democrats declare that the poor deserve Healthcare choice, they should get vouchers to subsidize care at the hospital of their choice instead of going to the government run "free" hospitals.

Hospital care is not the problem. They are going to take care of everyone regardless of state of insurance. People just won't pay if they dont have insurance.
The only thing this might do is transfer some burden from non-government hospitals, but the burden will still exist on the general public in some form.
Primary care is the larger issue at hand, as well as the ever-growing elderly population.

If you've never been in a VA facility then stop running your yap about what they are like.....you sound like a frightened hen cluck cluck clucking away.

I've had friends in a VA and rotated through a VA.
They are arse compared a half-decent academic medical center.
