Generals: Get real and cut Pentagon spending

link

quote:

Lt. Gen. Robert Gard is the chairman of the Center for Arms Control and Nonproliferation, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a former executive assistant to two secretaries of defense. Brig. Gen. John Johns is a former director of human resources development for the Army General Staff. He taught at the U.S. Military Academy and lectured at the Air War College, the Army War College, the U.S. Military Academy, and the Naval Academy. He serves on the board of advisers for the Council for a Livable World.

quote:

It is doubtful that future threats will call for many of the expensive weapon systems advocated by parochial interests and some political leaders -- a system such as the F-35 joint strike fighter. Developing this plane has cost more than was spent on veterans in the last 20 years.

quote:

Sadly, defense spending is driven by political interests, not necessity. In his 1986 book "The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers," Paul Kennedy argues that great powers fall by bankrupting themselves to rule extensive empires. After the invasion of Iraq, Kennedy published an op-ed, "Perils of Empire," suggesting America may furnish material for another chapter.

quote:

Our nuclear weapons policy is based on Cold War conditions that no longer exist. The Pentagon is expected to spend more than $700 billion on nuclear weapons over the next 10 years, for little added security. The former U.S. Strategic Command Chief Gen. James Cartwright has called for a drastic cut in nuclear weapons, saying the U.S. has a stockpile "beyond our needs. What is it we're really trying to deter? Our current arsenal does not address the threats of the 21st century." The program is based more on ideology than security.

This would be a good start but we have to tackle entitlements and other spending as well.

I'm fine with this. frick, at this point I'm fine with tax hikes.

But what I am not fine with is the complete lack of leadership with the Prez and the Dems in not allowing for cuts in entitlements. We have become an entitlement state. We need to cut back.

Eliminating the DOD would not eliminate the deficit. We would also have a plethora of other significant problems, shortly thereafter, that would dwarf the deficit, debt and "fiscal cliff" problems by a wide margin.

Oh I agree. Hopefully we'll hear something about entitlements in the next couple of weeks. It's just encouraging to see generals calling for cuts.

Entitlements, as that term is commonly used in these discussions...will....not....go....down, EVER.

The only real cuts to any upcoming budgets (covering the next 4 years at least) will be exclusively borne by the DOD.

Sure

I just don't like the idea that some people think that the pentagon should be untouchable until entitlements are also on the table. If you're a fiscal conservative, you take what you can get when you can get it.

Not the first time, DOD has aircraft they specifically said they didn't need in testimony before the House and Senate, C-17 and C-130s off the top of my head that get shoved through Congress.

I think I can vouch for the common soldier and say that C-130 gunships are some of the most valued assets in that particular branch of service.

C-17

That's a sweet, sweet ride though. Out of all of the plane rides in my life, among the 4 best, 2 were on C-17s and 2 were DC-10s (including the charter flight home from Kuwait City).

Just incredibly awesome rides...

On the other hand, nukes have to really be a pain in the arse if you have to manage them. I know the Army and Surface Navy guys were happy to get rid of theirs.

I wonder what Secretary Wynne and General Moseley are doing these days.

Don't confuse the AC-130s with the standard arse and trash hauler C-130. Awesome as they are we bought more than we needed to keep production lines open.

I'm for cuts, a lot can be cut in the military the budget system creates waste and there is a lack of accountability in a lot of areas.

But the above is a bad analogy, Vets benefits don't come out of DOD, national defense should not be reduced to fund any entitlements, national defense should be cut based upon defense needs.
