Why isn't anyone talking about the GAO investigation into the Obamaphones (AKA The Lifeline program)?

Fraud Found in FCC Lifeline Program

quote:

The GAO even went undercover to test whether the telecommunications companies participating in the program, ranging from giants like Verizon (VZ, +0.56%) and AT&T (T, +0.29%) to the smallest rural carriers, were doing adequate eligibility checks. Of fake applications submitted to 19 carriers, 12 carriers approved Lifeline payments.

Right... cause it's not about the subsidization, it's all about the fact that phone technology has changed.

The proliferation of fraud is about the fact that phone technology has changed. You can register multiple times for cell phones and you can't for a physical address. Think!

You want to know when the program really took off (i.e. Started being abused)? Funny how it didn't coincide with the Clinton or Bush administrations?

Color me shocked. I see free phone booths set up at half the gas stations I drive past. I am sure those folks are getting something for running the apps, that gives incentive to lie on the apps.

You can't imagine how many Mexican nationals I've seen lining up for an Obamaphone when I lived on the border. They hand those things out with no verification at all.

It takes a lot of work to create the most wasteful and/or fraudulent program in the federal government.

Congratulations.
