The 2012 killing of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman opened a debate about the limits of self-defense, and it hasn't let up since Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder after jurors received instructions on Florida's "stand your ground" law.
this is such mythology created by the media, basically
they didn't even use this defense at trial. they used standard self defense
CNN article
quote:
George Zimmerman, set to stand trial in the 2012 shooting death of teenager Trayvon Martin, on Tuesday waived his right to a "stand your ground" pretrial immunity hearing. Zimmerman's attorneys have decided they will try this as a self-defense case.
Florida's deadly force law, also called "stand your ground", was passed in 2005. It allows people to meet "force with force" if they believe they or someone else is in danger of being seriously harmed by an assailant. Under the law, a person can use deadly force anywhere as long as he is not engaged in an unlawful activity, is being attacked in a place he has a right to be, and reasonably believes that his life and safety are in danger as a result of an overt act or perceived threat committed by someone else.
even in an article describing it as a regular self defense case (and not SYG), they include this stuff merging the 2
also, that article has great quotes by Ben Crump, who is 1/100 the lawyer that O'Mara is

Given Zimmerman's behavior since his OJ like "not guilty" verdict, you might want to rethink who you call a thug.
Zimmerman is a true piece of shite
but
he was not guilty of 2nd degree murder re: Trayvon

This law will effectively require a trial before a trial for anyone who invokes self defense, most of whom will be the very kind of people the OP lashes out against.
The end result of this will be the further clogging of the Florida judicial system, as you will essentially have two trials, which means prosecutors will have less time to deal with other cases involving violent crimes where self defense isn't at issue.
but this shifts the burden to the prosecution, which is good for protecting the criminally accused from the state

Please show where I said something racist

That article is false. The Stand Your Ground defense was not used in the Zimmerman case.

To a certain extent. With no provisions put in place to self report use of lethal force, you leave people the opportunity to kill and then claim self defense years later and evidence is gone or significantly more difficult to prove. Limit the window to claim this as your defense and I'm in.

yeah this mythology is annoying
GZ didn't even have a place to retreat to, as he was being beaten against a road/curb. SYG just says you don't have to retreat when faced with a threat and can respond with force by "Standing your ground." if you can't retreat, then you can't even use SYG (and O'Mara didn't)
he spoke at length after the trial about how they didn't use SYG and it was just plain ole self defense

Yes and combine it with the fact that in the other case in the article self-defense was rejected and you have a news article that doesn't provide an example as to why the legislative change is needed.
And they wonder why America's faith in journalism is at rock bottom.

I was referring to OP's posts.

Just a roundabout way of legalizing the myrdering amd genocide of black people.
Feel threatened? Bam! Dead. No consequences.
It's a disgusting way of the GOP to enable their violent supporters to keep the "browning of America" from occurring.

just want to say, if you fire your gun 10 times then it isn't for self defense.
bullshite.
You shoot until the threat is stopped.
Not killed, not wounded, not gun empty, not some kind of arbitrary number.
You shoot until the threat is stopped or over.
For example
Years ago a cop was in a foot pursuit with a shoplifter when the shop lifter spun around and started shooting at him.
The officer drew his weapon and returned fire. The suspect continued advancing and shooting the officer until he was close enough for the officer to grab, put the gun to the suspect head, and shot him in the head point blank.
All in all if I remember correctly the officer shot the suspect 7 or 8 times....but it wasn't until the last one that stopped the threat.
Truth is gunfights aren't like the movies. Handguns actually are very poor at stopping an attacker unless you luck up and get a shot that affects the central nervous system.
With adrenaline pumping, often times people will not even react to being shot and will continue attacking.

Actually, before the shooting he was a pretty stand up guy. I wonder how years of outright lies in the national media affected him, not to mention having to deal with killing someone - even if it was the only thing he could have done other than die.

I'd call it a non-event. Not going to hurt it either.
