Feds tell Web firms to turn over user account passwords

LINK

quote:

Secret demands mark escalation in Internet surveillance by the federal government through gaining access to user passwords, which are typically stored in encrypted form.

The U.S. government has demanded that major Internet companies divulge users' stored passwords, according to two industry sources familiar with these orders, which represent an escalation in surveillance techniques that has not previously been disclosed.

If the government is able to determine a person's password, which is typically stored in encrypted form, the credential could be used to log in to an account to peruse confidential correspondence or even impersonate the user. Obtaining it also would aid in deciphering encrypted devices in situations where passwords are reused.

Absolutely fricking incredible.....

If they have a specific warrant for a single persons due to an investigation, then ok.... But a blanket declaration is insane.

You should wait to find out more details on this.

There is no need for your password if they want user account details (unless they're literally signing in and accessing the application through the intended user interface). If they have access to the data ...they have access. You're password doesn't matter. They're not signing into the app. They're querying databases/raw data.

It's time the Supreme Court change the definition of "reasonable expectation of privacy."

If the Feds were watching you, why does it matter? Are you doing something wrong/illegal?

You have no choice. If the have the data, it doesn't matter.

I'm just suggesting you wait on better/more reliable media before you go off the handle....b/c as I said the notion that they need your password is kinda' ridiculous.
