Just takes one.

quote:

...A single EMP nuclear weapon, detonated at apogee (between 50 to 200 miles above the US), would destroy the country’s entire electrical grid. Airplanes would fall out of the sky, our cars would not start, banking, nearly all non-barter related commerce would cease, and nine out of ten Americans would eventually die due to total societal collapse.

I'm on several emergency Management committees.

This is the one they're worried about.

From all I've read, this is the thing that could bring on the apocalypse.

Plus, it's not just EMP. There are four nations that could disable our grid with the push of a button and there isn't shite we can do about it.

I have a little telecommunications electronics degree and I still don't believe that all the hardware will fry. We may have some go down but all over the entire nation I can't fathom.

I guess this would take care of the antifa problem. We all know they can't go a minute without being on social media. They would literally die.

There is a really good book about the societal collapse in the U.S. that would follow an EMP. I think it is called "One Second After". Foreward written by Newt Gingrich.

No one would see it or hear it. If you are in a car, it would just die. Planes fall out of the sky. Same for cell phones, they just die. Power grid dies and stays down for years. Refrigeration is gone as are drugs that require refrigeration. Anyone with diabetes have months to live.

Grocery stores raided immediately, pharmacies, etc... all empty within days. Most importantly no radio at all. Total air silence which leads to even more panic. Cities go to hell quickly with disease widespread. Millions of city folks head to country thinking they have food, etc... Some form of martial law and many separate communities form their own government and militia.

Scary shite. Will make you think about stockpiling some food, drugs, and ammunition.

Most valuable commodity ends up being bullets. Read the book.

Some of us are already prepared. My main concern is my kids being trapped at their schools.

Could we not do the same to them?

Agreed.

We've come a long way in terms of hardening certain aspects of our grid and the military especially is almost completely hardened against an EMP attack ... but society would suffer big time.

1 - massive collapse of the food supply system from delivery to refrigeration. Within 72 hrs most of America, especially the cities, would be out of food.

2 - fresh water supply would collapse followed by sanitation.

3 - hospitals would be overwhelmed, along with our police forces. People on life supporting or life sustaining pharmaceuticals or machines would go quickly. Twenty million pacemakers in this country would cease pacemaking instantly.

4 - depending on the season, the elderly and extremely young would suffer and die in extreme cold or hot environments.

The main problem would be lack of transformers. Those are all being made in Canada and China these days ... none in the U.S. until just recently and they are nowhere up to full speed yet and will not be for years. Now, both China and Canada would be motivated to resupply us in a hurry IF they are able.

On the positive side, it would be extremely extremely difficult for a rogue nation to get a single high output nuclear device past our defenses and over Kansas and detonated.

Shouldn't airlines be putting manual overrides onto airplanes so that the pilots could take over control of the planes rather than have them "fall from the sky"?

The One Second After book series by William Forstchen outlines all of what you just posted, but as a fictional account told by a resident of Black Mountain, NC.

It's a really good series, and scared the shite out of me in regards to a possible EMP attack.

Didn't the funding for protecting military equipment from EMPs get wiped out several years ago?

It's a good book. I have taken my family camping up at Black Mountain many many times over the decades so it was all the better reading knowing the area up there so well.

I had pre-ordered the book before it hit the shelves and have since even ordered copies to give to friends. But I've been a long time reader of those sort of stories since I was a kid around the age of 7 and read Robinson Crusoe.

EMP is a special threat no doubt - it can come from several different sources not the least of which is is our own great heat tab in the sky.

I have a large, and several small, Faraday cages here on my property where we store spare electronic parts for my old truck, spare communication equipment, spare solar panels and repair kits, a spare well pump and generator repair parts, etc.

... a simple metal trashcan is a good start.
