Elon Musk: Automation Will Force Governments to Introduce Universal Basic Income

Recently, Elon Musk had the chance to share his thoughts on universal basic income (UBI) at the World Government Summit in Dubai. At the Summit, Musk had the opportunity to talk about the future, and the challenges the world will face in the next hundred years – including artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and the job displacement expected to come with it.
Musk relayed concerns that autonomous technology will impact jobs, and he noted that we will likely have intelligent, massive-scale automation for transportation relatively soon—within the next few decades, in fact: “Twenty years is a short period of time to have something like 12-15 percent of the workforce be unemployed,” he said, pointing out the extent of how automation will disrupt car-based transportation specifically.
However, displacement due to automation isn’t just limited to transportation, it will sweep across a number of industries, and Musk argues that the government must introduce a UBI program in order to compensate for this. “I don’t think we’re going to have a choice,” he said. “I think it’s going to be necessary. There will be fewer and fewer jobs that a robot cannot do better.”
Musk believes, however, that the issue goes deeper:
"[The] much harder challenge is: How will people then have meaning? A lot of people derive meaning from their employment. If you’re not needed, what is the meaning? Do you feel useless? That is a much harder problem to deal with. How do we ensure the future is a future that we want, that we still like?"

Musk should stick to technology and leave economics alone

The dems are light years ahead of Elon Musk on this subject. They are laughing at him right now.

I don't disagree with this 100%

Those aren't universal. I don't receive any of them.

If I were of a Machiavellian bent, I would just let all industrial needs be taken care of by robots and depopulate the world to a stable size.

you think UBI will be for everyone? Ha.

This is a very under-discussed topic.

That is what is implied by the term 'universal'.

What do you think universal means?

The economic argument is that a UBI would replace all that.
And isnt this just echoing what Trump's own labor secretary(or former labor nominee) said? You want to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, I will just replace them with robots eventually. Some jobs just do not justify the economic increase as alternatives like automation technology evolve and drop in price. The impact on autonomous vehicles in the trucking and transportation industry alone is a time bomb in the making. For many states, trucking is the largest employer field. Including Louisiana.
This is not some myth, a large number of companies after the great recession didn't hire back all the same number of workers as demand picked up, a lot used that period to identify areas of bloat and duplication that could be streamlined with automation.
In fact one of the strongest arguments against Trump's own rhetoric on bringing back jobs to Appalachia coal miners is not about coal being out-dated or environmental concerns, its that those older coal mines are not able to compete with newer western coal mines(or competing industries like natural gas) and thus, one of the ways they have tried to level the playing field is embracing and expanding automation. That opening up federal lands to further western coal expansion will only accelerate that trend or put those mines out of business entirely.

I get that. But you are talking about politicians. Think of all the things that don't mean what they should.

Soooooooooo communism?

Doesn't change the fact that you referred to food stamps, Medicaid, and WIC as universal income when, by definition, they are not.
