Can someone explain to me why news coverage have check marks next to candidates with less of a percentage than their opponent?

various types of mistakes,, sometimes the graphics aren't updated correctly or they just don't have the numbers but they have a report that one person won.
These people aren't rocket-surgeons ya know.

They're both right to a degree.
Mostly, they break down the state by counties. A candidate may be winning on percentage points, but counties that they know will go heavily in another candidate's favor are yet to be reported.
If candidate A is ahead on votes, but hasn't built a big enough lead to offset the gains candidate B will make in other counties, it foreshadows what is to come.
One of the reason for the horrible call in the 2000 election, was because Gore built up a lead and the "experts" assumed the lead was so big that Bush couldn't come back, so they called it prematurely.
