He signed up for Afg. To fight the Taliban. You know, the guys who attacked us, right??? He signed up to fight aggressors. Not Iraq. He didn't sign up to be an aggressor. He states this in his letter if you bothered to read the whole thing. This guy, and thousands of others were used, and lied to by our elected officials.

I think a big take away from this is that we were LIED to about the reasons for going to war. Americans need to be a lot more cautious about lying politicians when being told we need to go to war.

Vietnam was a bull shite war just like Iraq. Pretty sure just about everyone agrees on this

Then why didn't you start a thread about Kennedy and Johnson about the Vietnam War.....

Same thing, except for the political party in power.

Can I sign up to fight the Martians on Mars? I want to pick and choose who I get to fight too! Then when I one get what I want I'll write letters blaming the president for my own mistakes.

Obama lied too. He said that if he had a son it would look like trevon. I don't think that's true at all. Liar.

Yeah. We were. Johnson "misstated" (lied his arse off) about the events in the Tonkin Gulf, which he used as the premise to ramp up overt American military engagement in Vietnam. We were already very involved covertly, but of course trivial details like that are not for the general public to fret their pretty little heads over.

No, but you should be able to have some expectation that the president/VP/congress will uphold their own respective oaths to uphold the constitution and not enter into a completely bull shite war.

My great uncle enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps on December 10, 1941 to fight the Japanese who attacked us at Pearl Harbor. He eventually found himself as a bombardier in a B-17 flying missions over western Germany.

You go where the military tells you to go, my friend.

He signed up for the armed services fully knowing what he was getting into. I'm thankful for his service, but he's a bitter man, spending his last days bitching instead of with his family, and making peace with those closest to him. This is the ultimate look at me move.

That's not what he signed when he joined the military.

I mean, it does suck for him. He served his country ( a thing surprisingly few will do) and he got paralyzed for his trouble. It's a crap situation but he made that choice to join.

I totally understand much of what the writer says.

However, he reveals via his writing that he is not terribly informed. Despite attempt to the point of forgery, no one has ever shown Bush to be AWOL.

But, more importantly, I believe he is also incorrect about it being the biggest "strategic blunder". Frankly, while it may not have been true 11 years ago, I think it's safe to say that Afghanistan has that one sewed up.

Whether the reasons for going in were bad or not, Iraq is still a reasonably functioning country(by mid east standards) and, is not a pain in our arse in any way.

Afghanistan will NEVER be a functioning country after we leave and will go right back to being a pain in our arse in very short order.

In my view, every single Soldier who has died in Afghanistan AFTER we ran the Taliban out has been a wasted death.

Mr. Young has been a high-profile anti-war crusader for several years, this letter is not in the least bit surprising.

LINK

LINK

His Iraq war experience ended suddenly and tragically when he took a bullet to the spine while riding in a truck after just 5 days in country.

His service is appreciated. His decision to end his life is his to make. He certainly does not speak for all Iraq veterans though, as I have worked (via the NH National Guard) with dozens of them who served there at the height of the war, and came home proud of the work they did there. As were most of the Vietnam vets I know and have known.

Every man (or woman's) war experience is unique to them and them alone. It is a combination of physical, emotional and psychological moments in time, seen through their eyes. Individuals process those moments differently, both in real time and in their life's memory.

This letter reveals one man's feelings and one man's story.

Nothing more and nothing less.

I get so tired of this bull shite statement. You sound like REX with his biased mis-use of the word "lie."

There was pretty close to universal agreement over the facts as they were known in the decision to go into Iraq to remove the Saddam regime - the official policy of the CLINTON admin even before the attacks on 9-11.

There were a dozen rationales for the invasion that did not depend on the presence of wmd.

There is no question that in 20/20 hindsight that the wmd were not actually discovered, and that there may have been an intelligence failure in not knowing the precise details of the situation there.

However, the preponderance of the evidence AT THE TIME was that Saddam possessed wmd and was pressing for more.

AT THE TIME, every fricking DEM was falling all over themselves demanding that we take out Saddam - and whining that the 9/11 attack didn't occur during Clinton's tenure so HE could be the "war president."

You history-revisionist bastards who change stripes afterwards with self-rightious hubris make me sick.

DEMs made the switch from gung-ho "let's go kill Saddam" to "oh - this was a bad war" only as a political move. They discovered that Bush's popularity needed to be taken out and enlisted their ally the MSM to begin the drum-beat of "war based on lies."

Now your hero LBJ - he actually DID lie to get us neck deep into the Vietnam war. He just made up an incident to push thru the Gulf of Tonkin resolution. That bastard LIED about the reason to 'go to war' but never gets dumped on like Bush.

I hated LBJ from the time I was a kid - based on my grandfather's hatred for him. My grandfather knew him, and knew he was a lying bastard with no conscience. However even I supported his decision based on the 'Gulf of Tonkin' incident.

Never in my wildest imagination could I believe that a President of the United States, even a bad man like LBJ, would intentionally LIE to the American public - and to the congress - about something as serious as going to war.

You bastards that continue the 'bush lied' bull shite piss me off.
