House Republicans on Monday voted to eviscerate the Office of Congressional Ethics, the independent body created in 2008 to investigate allegations of misconduct by lawmakers after several bribery and corruption scandals sent members to prison.

Under the ethics change pushed by Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., the non-partisan Office of Congressional Ethics would fall under the control of the House Ethics Committee, which is run by lawmakers.

The first and only step appears to be to put a fox in every henhouse. That's how you drain the swamp.

Looks like it sucked up tax dollars. Would have been great if it had actually done some investigating.

Please provide citations (instead of ) as to what the Office of Congressional Ethics has cost the American taxpayer over the last 8 years compared to any tangible results they have affected.

How many were fired/indicted/convicted? What did it cost?

Still waiting for the answer.

Value far exceeds costs. Only an ignorant idiot would fail to see the benefits to having an independent organization that investigates these things rather than those being investigated conducting the investigations on themselves. Thats the type of shite that dictators do.

I understand the idea of unnecessary government oversight... I am having trouble with those who pass laws and conrol our budgets overseeing themselves. How is this the right direction?

How is this an independent agency?

All of the oversight committees have done nothing to stop the massive amount of government criminality and corruption. When is the last time an oversight committee of any kind has done anything to prevent or punish corruption? Who is paying the piper in DC?

I get the point about dictatorial comparisons, I do. But we have no reason to lament the loss of this bullshite institution.

tangible results

The thing with preventative agencies like these, is that they don't have a lot of tangible results. Like, for instance, we don't really have any data assessing how much property isn't stolen because it is illegal. By definition, these preventative measures will almost assuredly have very few tangible achievements which you are requesting.

There has to be some way to prove their effectiveness. What I see is a never ending tide of bullshite and corruption coming out of DC. How easy would it be to highlight an agency that actually stops at least some of it?

it's not hard to demonstrate at all IMO.

Well they certainly report their findings. Yet these people still get re-elected. The voter needs to take responsibility as well

this thing started in 2008. Are there any significant differences before and after that time period in terms of the occurrence of ethical misdeeds?

BTW, this has been a really really rough year for you politically. Brexit happened (which you mocked and claimed wouldn't) and trump won (which you mocked and claimed wouldn't). To add insult to injury, your homestate of MO ridiculously swung republican and voted for trump by more than 20 points, the largest r margin since 1972. According to nate silver, MO is trending GOP more than anyother state.

I take it you don't see the value to laws regarding criminality either then?

Tell me, how much property isn't stolen because the law says it is a crime to do so.

These things are not simple, and any attempt to make it so is misguided. The only simple part about this thing is that self-investigating is not the answer.
