Does Trump need congressional authorization to launch missiles at Syria?

YES! Rand needs to be on every channel shouting this.

War making authority needs to go back to the Congress where the Constitution says it belongs.

End result will be, less war!

It should, but a Humanitarian Crisis will be cited to allow this to fall under the purview of an emergency action.

Need or should have?

Two different questions.

Does the War Power Act apply here or is that specific to boots on the ground only?

There is no emergency though.

He's the President. The War Powers Act applies when Congress says it does, by impeaching him.

Negative

But I bet whatever military action we do take, some progressive a-hole in Washington or Oregon or Hawaii will sue.

Progressives have went full retard.

No, I mean not unless its one of those things where he "needs authorization" but no one is ever going to do anything if he doesn't get it.

Since at least Reagan (and probably further) I can remember President's launching air strikes without much in the way of pre-authorization from Congress.

Maybe the DimDems will literally "stand in the way"? The rest of us can hope anyway!

That's the whole point. Everybody in the the Military knows that if Brass want something, and the War Powers Act is potentially in the way, a National Emergency or a Humanitarian Crisis will be the excuse. Do you want Schumer/Pelosi being the Arbiter of military policy?

Sustained bombardment would be illegal I think-- isn't that why the air war in Cambodia was illegal during Vietnam?

As I learned from our previous president, an attack requires neither congressional approval, nor congressional notification.
