No.
Yes, if I was single and she miraculously agreed.

I would cut out the stop at Zephyr Field.

I think people would use it.

I doubt the cost estimates are in line. They have to replace a bridge over the spillway, double up tracks in some sections, and may have to install a flyover at the yard in Metarie.

They absolutely don't need to have a stop at Zephyr stadium when a new transit terminal is going in at the airport just down the street.

They need to be able to tell politicians that stops everywhere there is space for a platform won't work.

Maybe even cut out the stop in La Place. I would hate to see what gets on the train at that point.

Would be a completely absurd idea.....almost as dumb as the ferry crossing Lake Pontchartrain. Aside from the final stop in New Orleans (and even that's a stretch) what are your public transportation options to get to point B, and won't that raise the cost of your overall trip, and leave with you less freedom.
People going to get off at Zephyr Stadium and walk to work? Unless they work at Winn Dixie or McDonalds across the street I doubt it.
This would be a tremendous waste of money.

Who would ride it with only 2 runs a day?

Using their own numbers it would lose around 2 million dollars the first year, and take less than a 1000 people off the road each day.

It's a big loser. IMHO.

You know there once was rail service between BR and NO. They stopped it for a good reason. It was losing money. Why start it back up only to create another big govt. money loser when we have a shortage of funds now for higher education, etc?

The Zephyr stop makes no sense at all.

this is a perenial problem for rail. Pols want it to stop everywhere but riders get annoyed (unless you are fat/lazy).

There is a section of light rail that has 3 stops in about a half a mile where I live. Its ridiculous. One time I missed the train and ran to the next stop and beat the train. just silly.

Lots of people won't use public transit b.c poor people use it, and they don't like being around poor people. I could see this as an issue in BR-NOLA, from what little I know about the region

It's "free" gubmint money.....

Why not give states the flexibility to use money like this on such things on coastal restoration instead of feeling forced to finance idiotic projects like this?

No. While it might be popular initially, it would quickly turn into just another subsidy for the "poor". I think they would be the only ones to use it regularly, and they would of course bitch about any and all rates or rate increases. On a smaller scale, just look at the LA Swift bus service that discontinued last year. The small number of people that used the service didn't want to pay anything for it after the Fed grant ran out.

The only time it would be full would be for Saints and LSU games, ala the CATS buses here in BR. I see it as something like the metro system in St. Louis. For Cardinal games it was packed. The rest of the time it was just a handful of hipster and hustlers at any given time. I was there for a 5 days recently and the vast majority of locals I talked to told me that they never ride the train (outside of Rams or Cardinal games), and especially would not reccommend that a visitor ride it after dark.

I think it could be successful, but the areas around each stop would need to be developed. For example, if you had new residential/commercial space around the stop at Laplace, it would give an incentive for people to live outside the city and have an easier commute in than having to get on I-10 everyday. If I lived in Laplace and worked in the city, I'd take the train.

Mind you I don't live in LA anymore, so I have a different point of view.

People that live in La Place and work in NO, might take the train.

But the system is going to cost over 6 million dollars a year to run. That means at 10 bucks a head it would take 600,000 riders not 210,00 like they project to break even.

And then you have the original capital outlay to come up with.

It's all pie in the sky. You won't get enough riders to support it.

If they aren't ever going to widen I-10 along the Bonnet Carre or finish up I-49, then this is about the only other alternative.

If it were to run to Louie Armstrong (MSY), I would take it for my flights out instead of driving then paying $40 in parking fees for a weekend out of La.

But it would need to run more often than twice a day and make the trip faster than 1.5 hours.

And yes, if I were still single I would smush.

Ok.......how would you get from the end of the rail line to your final destination? Let's say you work in the Freeport building, you would have probably a 1-1.5 mile walk to work. Maybe .5 mile if you took the streetcar to the corner of Poydras/Loyola. How is that beneficial? That's at least 30 minutes after you get off the train. It makes even less sense if you work in the new medical complex. What if it's raining?
Even further, how are you saving any time if it already takes 1hr30 to drive to the city and the train is the same? Plus I'm sure it takes a lot less time to park than to arrange other means of travel that you need.
Nothing to see here other than some politicians probably looking to pay some friends off to do a study.

I would imagine that if it was half way successful then they would add more trains and maybe an express train, but that would require BR and NOLA politicans to be competent.

Only stipulation would be that BR needs to get some fricking taxis
