Do you think that gender roles are natural or symbols of oppression?

My coworker has 1 year old twin boys, and she and her husband have decided to raise them "genderless", as they believe that gender preferences (such as boys playing with GI figures and dinosaurs and girls playing with dolls and barbies)are invented and oppressive. What are your thoughts on this issue? Do you think children should be raised "genderless", as in they should not wear clothes or play with toys that go with their gender, but rather should "choose" what route to go?
Seems crazy to me.

Your coworker is an idiot. I couldn't imagine working with someone that damned strange.

Your coworker and her husband are dumb. If they believe there is no such thing as gender then why are they even married much less having children?

Ask them why they play traditional gender roles. What a couple of assholes and the husband is obviously a beta.

It's funny that these people tend to label themselves as 'pro-science' when the rejection of difference in the sexes is about as unscientific as it gets.

Without any influence whatsoever, our boy loves trucks, construction vehicles and slugs.

The woman wears the panties in that household for sure.

Sounds like they both wear panties.

Typically the boy will model after his father and the girl after her mother as a young child if it's a 2 parent household. It's natural instinct. There are a lot of things I liked as a kid and my parents never "encouraged" it.
I remember always wanting the z71 toy truck with the bass boat to play with, and toy farm tractors. I asked for them on my own will because my dad was a farmer and I wanted to be like him and for some reason I just loved boats even though at the time my dad didn't own one.

Gender confusion sounds like a wonderful prelude to later life

Your coworker is a dumb bitch, and her husband is a spineless pussy. Bet she makes him sit down to pee.

Not pushing them towards certain toys is hardly being raised "genderless." It's also not very effective, unless they're also planning on isolating them from television, video games, movies, raising them in a home-school / commune where they only interact with other "genderless" kids, etc. Otherwise, they'll pick up on those societal gender role cues sooner or later.
I think it's nice from the simple standpoint of kids being allowed, whenever possible, to self-direct their own play and choose their own interests, but that's more of a general free-range parenting thing than a specific gender issue.
IMO, if you think gender roles are bullshite, it's foolish to pretend they don't exist. Better to raise your kid to recognize them and call out the bullshite so they can develop armor against people influencing them with "dinosaurs aren't for girls."

Mission Viejo, CA explains it all. These are the same people that want to put everyone in groups and wage class warfare.

There's nothing wrong with letting ones kids decide for themselves if they want to play football or be in the school drama program. Obviously gender roles are a product of societal norms so they can't be totally ignored. Parents shouldn't force their kids to adhere to a certain gender standard however.

I believe gender roles are a product of millions of years of evolution.

I had a neighbor like this. I got their point to an extent.
They had a little girl who, despite being pretty girly, did really like toys and books you'd get for boys. She liked Tonka trucks and dinosaurs and all that stuff (as well as dolls and coloring books). They didn't want to tell her that she couldn't have something that was "for boys" because they believed that societal pressures like that are why, for example, we don't have many women studying physics.
I wouldn't say they raised her "genderless" per se, but rather didn't want to say she couldn't have/do something because it was "for boys."

Both. Depends on the relationship and the person.
