Sen. John Walsh (D-Mont.) is dropping his Senate campaign in the wake of a plagiarism scandal, giving Republicans an even bigger edge in the critical open-seat race.

"The 2007 research paper from my time at the U.S. Army War College has become a distraction from the debate you expect and deserve. I am ending my campaign so that I can focus on fulfilling the responsibility entrusted to me as your U.S. senator," Walsh said in a statement emailed to supporters. "You deserve someone who will always fight for Montana, and I will."

The story up here is that the Governor appointed him as Senator to get him out of his hair. Apparently he was proving to be a liability to the governor's credibility. Which makes me question how low down does Steve Bullock have to be to put Walsh in a position to cause greater damage to the people of Montana just to get him out of his hair.

Any truth to the rumor that he stole this tactic out of Robert Torricelli's book?

Yeah, not so much. The Montana state Dems can now hand-pick a candidate capable of winning the race, such as retired Gov. Brian Schweitzer.

Schweitzer is reportedly considering a presidential run for 2016 but I don't see it happening.

I completely agree that this is not good for Republican Steve Daines, who was on his way to an easy win over Walsh. Walsh' situation was getting worse by the day and he had only a few days left to be able to drop out and get another Democrat qualified to be on the ballot. I was hoping his pride would keep him in the race (a la Akin in MO in 2012).

Whoever the Dems run in his place will likely be a tougher opponent than Walsh had become. Nevertheless, Daines remains the solid favorite in November.
