Manchin has been planning to run as an independent (or as an R if possible) in the next cycle. He did not want to make a move before the election.
Manchin is also angry that senators were tough on his daughter during the epi-pen hearings.
With W.Virginia tilting heavily Republican, he is out for himself. Also, Reid's term ends this Jan. What's the harm in showboating?
