Not a defender of JBE, I do think he or any Republican that would hold the office is left with very little choice in terms of revenue .....I do not like his proposed Gross receipts tax....but Republicans in the legislature did not come to the table with anything.
Also, Republicans ran a candidate in Vitter as well as Dardenne that were not all that well liked by the electorate. I liked Angelle, but I'm biased in that I have been friends with him for about 20 years. In the future though, the state republicans need to find better candidates....it kind of reminds me of how they would deal with Mary Landrieu.....run Woody Jenkins or another unlikeable Republican against her....remember, an election is a popularity contest when you come down to it
