Cut TOPS----

It is welfare plain and simple and along with other welfare it should be cut.
I laughed today when I read a letter some kid wrote about how without TOPS LSU would see students go out of state. He should check the tuition at other schools.
If Mississippi can get by without a TOPS subsidy so can we.
Higher ed needs to be cut too.

Get rid of GI Bill for anyone who didn't have direct combat exposure (vast majority of "vets").

It's a welfare plan, but it could be a valid merit based scholarship program. It needs stitches, not a cleaver.

Its a no-brainer but politics prevents common sense. For every one of these programs we like to pick on there is an even more costly one that is politically untouchable.

It doesn't have to be cut completely, just raise the standards to respectable levels(3.5+, 26+ ACT), etc.
Oh, wait that'll never happen because: RACIST

They are all politically untouchable.
We specifically made health insurance and other fringe benefits non-taxable because of wage controls during ww2.
Well, ww2 was 73 years ago and I see no change to that crap law.

Yes.....
Lets gut one of the extremely rare state programs that actually benefit the middle class producers before we gut anything for the freeloaders.

TOPS is an investment. There are changes that need to be made, but helping a kid get through college to become productive members of society benefits everyone I would think. Raising the standards could be a good change. College is expensive, and there are really smart students out there that use TOPS to better themselves.
ETA: Welfare is good if it helps people put themselves in better positions. Giving them access to education is a great way to do that. I'm not saying make attending college free, but helping them with expenses is ultimately a good investment.

As others have said raise the requirements and problem solved. Yeah it's welfare but so what? Whats stupid is flushing the money down the toilet on kids that don't really belong in college. Give TOPS to the kids who deserve it, and past a certain threshold give it to them to attend a trade school only. In either case a worthy investment.

So you're in favor of stopping athletic scholarships? Are they welfare, too?
Posted on 2/6/17 at 9:58 pm to LSURussian
The elite get the athletic scholarships
Posted on 2/6/17 at 10:11 pm to I B Freeman
Many of these kids would get scholarships or partial scholarships out of state.

I'm much more in favor of doing away with athletic scholarships than I am of academic ones (which entails raising the bar on TOPS).

If you cut TOPS the colleges in Louisiana would increase merit based scholarships anyways. They want good students at their schools. Cut TOPS and invest in making our elementary, jr. high, and highschools not the worst in the country.

Agree there could be cuts there. Maybe partial GI Bill for non-combat exposure, but keep full for combat exposure.
