Are y'all really choosing your Congressman between an 85-year old ex-con and a 90-year old ex-football coach? A friend sent me a poll showing those two leading by a lot and trying to prove that we are crazy down there. What's the story?

It's not Paul Dietzel the coach, it's Paul Dietzel the grandson. And he's one of many Republican candidates.

My bad. I see his website.

So the 'leading' choices are an 85-year old ex-con and a 20-something coattail rider - according to some poll. Again, what's the deal?

Claitor.

A libertarian-leaning Republican.

Claitor ain't no libertarian.

That said, I'm hoping he wins this thing. Don't want The Felon. Don't want Jindal's boy from his Administration. And don't want the 20-something year old coat rider. He's kinda reminding me of Billy Tauzin, III.

He leans that way. He certainly doesn't vote in line with the establishment GOP.

At this stage in a Congressional race, it's all about name recognition. The reason EWE polls high is because people know him. The reason Dietzel polls high is because people know his grandfather (and some may very well think they're voting for the grandfather.)

There are other candidates in the race. You have a State Senator, a former state Coastal Restoration Authority head, a former LSU football player and a couple of businessmen. No one knows who these people are. Once people start raising money and running TV ads, that will change.

And in fairness to Dietzel, he's been a successful businessman as well. Yes, he's riding off his grandfather's name, but he's not a lightweight. There are several good Republican candidates in the race, and he's one of them.
