the rioters at UC Berkley wanted to shut this guy down and shut him up
as far as public profile and awareness he was on his way out of the door, since the incident he's been on several tv shows being introduced to new audiences by the millions and CNN is whining about him

So what Tapper was saying was: Cannot shut up journalism but this editor at a news outlet cannot be allowed to speak?
