CNN runs the happiest/saddest states twitter "study"

And Louisiana is the saddest place on earth.

Posted on the OT last night, and seems obviously ridiculous, but CNN ran it this afternoon anyway.

Original article

quote:

The researchers coded each tweet for its happiness content, based on the appearance and frequency of words determined by Mechanical Turk workers to be happy (rainbow, love, beauty, hope, wonderful, wine) or sad (damn, boo, ugly, smoke, hate, lied). While the researchers admit their technique ignores context, they say that for large datasets, simply counting the words and averaging their happiness content produces "reliable" results.
No. Definitely no problem with those terms. The graphs in the link have the complete lists.

I don't think a study had to be conducted to find out that people that live in Louisiana are fricking miserable.

I wouldn't call that a study. Read the article.

When was the last time you read the rant after a 10-win season?

How could something like this ever be proven.

Yeah I'm sure this is as credible an organization as their 'study' is.

In Louisiana it often is. I call my five year old daughter boo sometimes.

A study on the perceived context of words that are analyzed out of context. Yeah, this seems like a waste of time.

This plus LSU fans complaining about everything should pretty much solve the riddle.

The people in LA who are actually sad are probably so miserable they can't afford a phone/computer to tweet with.

They could have just perused tigerrant for a while and come to this conclusion.

why yes, it is.

Also in the thread from last night, you can see that it was the terms that make the study complete bull shite.

And "boo" has to have been a recurring term they found in places they wanted to deem as being "unhappy." There's no legitimate reason for it to be on that list.

Can't blame me. I don't use Twitter and I spend much of my time in Virginia.
