That's what I don't understand. Maybe when one of N. Korea's missile tests goes off-course and strays into China will they realize that the system is not all that bad.

Not true. It, like all missile shields that exist today can easily be overwhelmed. It will only provide the region protection against North Korea's below average balistic missiles, and that is if they don't fire more than a dozen or so at once. The only threat it creates for China is the long range radar that will allow us to have a better picture of missile tests conducted by China.
