Stole this from the MSB

quote:

The Canadian Football League and Canadian Football League Players' Association will introduce changes to their sport later today that will improve player safety and could have ripple effects well beyond the league. Effectively immediately, the league will no longer allow full-contact padded practices during the season, significantly reducing the number of collisions players sustain over the course of a season.

quote:

Teams are currently allowed full-contact practices during training camp, plus an additional 17 days during the season. While contact practices will still be permitted at training camp, full-contact practices during the regular season will immediately become a thing of the past. Football at all levels has reduced and restricted the amount of collision permitted during practices in recent years as research has pointed toward a direct correlation between the number of collisions players experience and long-term brain trauma.

quote:

No league is known to have eliminated padded full-contact practices as the CFL will today. The CFL will also extend its regular season from 20 to 21 weeks, significantly reducing the number of short turnarounds between games, such as teams having to play three games in 11 days or four in 17 days. Teams will now have three bye weeks instead of two. The number of games each team plays will remain at 18.

This is coming to the NFL next. This is political, because I think this is what liberalism is doing to football. They are after the sport because it has played a big part in the American culture for decades, and it's our largest source of entertainment.

It's a quest to make the game irrelevant and restricted because it's "dangerous".

I think most should know football is a dangerous sport. That's the beauty of it. You have the choice to play it or not.

If the doctors agreed with you, so would I.

There are plenty of full contact sports that dont involve politics. Go watch any MMA or boxing bout, or hell even rugby (or if you want to get really crazy- hurling).

This isn't about just the sport. It's about culture. Football is and has been a huge part of American culture for decades now.

The war on football is actually just part of the larger war on masculinity.

Masculine virtues and activities that encourage or celebrate them are being eradicated.

Mainstream society has been extremely feminized over the past few decades and this crusade has ramped up considerably over the past 10 or so years.

Anything that improves safety without fricking up the rules is a win for the fans.

The simple answer is to remove the facemask to reduce injuries. But like anything else political the easy answer will never be considered.

this isn't about politics, players and former players are suffering from brain damage.

perhaps some of us have effects from high school football.

I don't want to lose football either but don't make this about your politics.

Then make the sport illegal. Not like anyone's ever known football is dangerous and you can die from it.

The sport will always be dangerous as long as contact takes place. My politics stand at the issue.

It's just like any other version of progressivism. More and more changes take place until the game is no more or a former shell of its self.

This seems very unAmerican.

The govt didnt make thr sport illegal, a private (foreign) league changed some practice regulations.

Have you not read this thread before you posted? It's about the gradual changes for football that build and add until the sport is no longer recognizable. Not just the CFL rule change.

You have to look at things in the long term. It's about eventually deeming the sport so dangerous it can not be played anymore. That's progressive change.

Once again, The NFL already has very little practice contact during the season. Been that way for 10-12 years.

GTFO.

Teddy Roosevelt called a " Football Summit" at the White House during his Presidency and threatened to ban Football, by Executive order ,if the rules weren't changed to make it safer( Imagine Obama threatening to ban Football).

1)The Forward pass was created - " sissies"

2) 1st down moved to 10 yards instead of 5 to create more strategy/ finesse instead of brawling for 5 yards.

3) 6 down linemen created to prevent flying wedges & complete scrums

I miss the days of headhunting/ smash mouth Football ,but stop pretending rule changes have anything to do with " liberals" or emasculating modern men or politics

No one has ever accused Teddy Roosevelt of being effeminate or promoting the emasculating of men. Sports evolve.

This is the answer - Remove most of the battering ram "defensive" gear and the collisions will become less harmful.

CFL to end full contact practices during the season by Deuces

For the past 6 years of coaching football, I limited my kids to 20 minutes total for the week. This is always done mid-week to reinforce heads-up tackling being pushed in youth football.

I did this after watching practices from Nationally ranked Trinity High School in Louisville. Very little contact through the week. Run a lot of skeleton drills with entire offense and defense.

Lessening their head and body contact keeps them healthy and fresh for games. I have only lost one player temporarily to injury the past six seasons, and that was a broken wrist. I believe it works without sacrificing the quality of play on the field.

I have no problem with limited contact practices. I still think that contact practice should take place at least one a well, imo, to keep technique fresh and to keep players accustomed. These guys are pros, but practice is still needed.

What's next in football though?

Teddy Roosevelt was a one time member of the Progressive party. That change made football the way we know it today, but where will the changes bring it now? His proposal kept people from dying playing the game, as it was a big problem at once.

I'd argue the forward pass is the reason for targeting. 90% of the calls and ejections are among db's in pass coverage, and some linebackers.

Our issues now are long lasting effects of brain lesions from trauma. As long as contact is in football, especially if players play 15 seasons, this is going to happen. Where else does change have to go to make it safer?
