Can we force independence on some of our territories/protectorates?

Im guessing these places are a massive net drain for us.

Grant them independence from the shackles of the USA

Pay them some money every year to rent the land for military bases but otherwise let them be free.

It is the right thing to do.

Puerto Rico has been bouncing off the bankruptcy floor for what seems like a long time. Time to give them best wishes.

Doesn't work that way. You want to to occupy, live with it.

That's the point. We no longer want to occupy because the place is horribly mis-managed. Best wishes.

Then why hasn't it happened? Keep dreaming, bud.

Because the US hasn't wanted to?

I mean is Guam going to declare war on the US if the US decides they're independent now?

Yeah, and I'd say occupying a territory, granting citizenship to its population, and cutting them off because it is expedient to do so is mis-management. Doesn't matter if you don't like it, it won't happen.

Go back and read the thread title, boss. If it happens, it will be self-determination, not forced. G'day.

You said to the OP "that's not how it works."

It most certainly can work that way.

Is it likely to happen, nah. But there is nothing saying it couldn't. That's what happens when you're a tiny territory under the protection of a gigantic nation.

At any point in time that gigantic nation can say "get bent." And bam! You're independent.

Fair enough. Based on how the question was posed, you're right.
