Impossible parameters, but initial thoughts? If he is disastrous, average, Reagan II...

No. Assuming the Republicans work well together, I see no reason that any Republican would seriously consider it.

No. When has a sitting president ever faced a re-election challenge from someone within his own party?

Edit: apparently my youth is showing if GHWB was challenged by his own party in 92. Won't need a challenger in 2020. They'll all be on Trump train by then MAGA

Depends on how big a shite show his White House ends up being.

I could also see a scenario in which he doesn't run again

Ted Kennedy almost took Carter out.

If Trump sells out, I can see it.

Run against The Don? He vanquished 12 this time with zero political experience. You think with 4 years under his belt he'd be less formidable?

Yes, but they will run under the Democratic ticket. The Democrats are utterly fricked and they have no one to turn to. They will get someone like Rand Paul, John Huntsman, or Mitt Romney to run under their ticket.

Ford was challenged by Reagan in 1976 and Truman was, kind of, in 1948. Wasn't GHWB, too?
