California's bullet train could cost taxpayers 50% more than estimated — as much as $3.6 billion more. And that’s just for the first 118 miles through the Central Valley, which was supposed to be the easiest part of the route between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

A confidential Federal Railroad Administration risk analysis, obtained by The Times, projects that building bridges, viaducts, trenches and track from Merced to Shafter, just north of Bakersfield, could cost $9.5 billion to $10 billion, compared with the original budget of $6.4 billion.

The federal document outlines far-reaching management problems: significant delays in environmental planning, lags in processing invoices for federal grants and continuing failures to acquire needed property.

If it's government funded I would say it's right on target.

They will eventually ban it since it has "bullet" in the name.

And that was before Gov. Jerry Brown warned Tuesday that California’s projected 2017-18 budget shows a $1.6-billion deficit.

So much for their fiscal success story.

More than likely, they knew the initial estimate was low but was not economically/ politically feasible to move the project forward at the higher bid amount so it was lowballed to get it passed...

Ask the VA idiots that are still completing a major hospital in Colorado.
Went from approx. $330 million to $1.73 Billion!
Still going.

Well, if we look at whose investment fund was involved in the initial contract, we see a very familiar name... Sen. Feinstein's...

1- This was never intended to be made public. They were going to pretend everything was fine.

2- Why the frick was this document 'confidential' in the first place? (see 1).

Are the Boxer or Fienstein families involved in the planning and/or construction.

This is a great example of why government needs to stay out of healthcare.

I'm driving now but I can answer this in detail when I'm done.

Suffice to say that this happens by design. I don't mean they plan it to happen. I mean that the government contract process can't help but produce this result
