California state Senate President Kevin de León (D) has filed legislation to prevent state and local law enforcement agencies from working with federal immigration officials to deport undocumented immigrants.

The bill, dubbed the California Values Act, would prohibit state and local law enforcement agencies from enforcing immigration laws from being carried out in “safe zones” — public schools, hospitals and courthouses — in order to guarantee undocumented immigrants access to those services.
The bill “will make it clear California public schools, hospitals, and courthouses will not be used by the Trump regime to deport our families, friends, neighbors, classmates and co-workers,” said Assemblyman Marc Levine (D), the bill’s chief sponsor in the lower chamber.

The measure does not prohibit law enforcement agencies from transferring violent offenders into federal custody to be deported. But it does prohibit those agencies from acting as federal immigration officers and cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in order to deport other undocumented immigrants.

Cut federal funding to the state and cities that enact this

Use the money to hire on federal agents

Go clean up that mess using their own money

Sorry, Senator de Leon, but the ship on federal power v state's rights sailed a long, long time ago. Your political posturing will do no good. The boot you wear on another's neck eventually finds its way to yours.

Trump has pledged to block federal funding from cities that give sanctuary to undocumented immigrants.

I can go along with hospitals, in the same line of the unwritten rule that most local law enforcement doesn't serve bench warrants at the ER. But I fail to see any reason why schools and courthouses should be off limits.

Yep.

De León, who is considering a run for governor in 2018, has promised to roll out a package of immigrant rights legislation. Other legislators in Sacramento have offered measures to provide legal aid to those facing deportation proceedings.Free legal representation.

The irony of all this is that I honestly believe Mexicans (legal and illegal) are much more assimilated into Texas than in California. Texas want's the border controlled, but Hispanics in general just seem much more a part of the culture, rather than being a separate ethnic group. Maybe it's just my experience.

Most CA people I have been around are more likely to think of Hispanics as a "them" than Texans are.

And now they want to put them on modern day reservations.

No, give it back to taxpayers that don't live in California

Or don't clean it up. I don't care.

Immigration isn't even a states rights issue. It's one of the mechanisms that is supposed to be enforced by federal Govt

So the state is giving the federal government the middle finger, just like all the states that voted to legalize weed?
