They ran the numbers and found out that they were going to be wayyyy over budget for the 'single-payer'.
The found JUST single-payer was going to cost more than what the entire budget for California was spending.
Vermont found out the same thing.
The old white liberals are dieing off in Cally, the illegals are taking over year by year. The producers and the middle and upper class are leaving in droves.
In 30 years, Cally will be another crap hole just like Mexico.

That's because none of them have actually put any thought into developing a universal (not necessarily single-payer) system, certainly not when marketing it to the electorate.
An affordable single-payer system would not be the pie-in-the-sky, everything's free system they keep promising voters. Massive taxes for limited coverage, and until they can do something about the insane cost of Rx drugs, even that isn't a reality.

It's a good bet that when the speaker started looking at the numbers that was needed for single payer in California, he just about shite himself knowing that it was impossible and his arse was still going to burn because there's no way in hell it's going to work.

I think they estimated it would cost $400 billion just for single-payer in Cally, that is three times more than the general budget for the state.
There would be huge huge cost overruns, probably in the tens of billions of $$$. $400 billion is most likely an huge UNDERESTIMATE of what single payer would cost.
There are 40 million people in Cally, many don't work and are on welfare.
They would have to implement huge tax increases on an ever DECREASING tax base.
The big boy gazillionares would start jumping ship, Silicon Valley would die out and become a ghost town.
The hollow-wood elites would scatter like roaches.
Cally becomes another failed state ala Mexico.
