Big change in how Americans view Bush

quote:

For the first time since 2005, more Americans now view former President George W. Bush favorably than unfavorably, according to a Gallup poll released Tuesday.

Forty-nine percent have a favorable view of Bush, while 46 percent view him unfavorably, the poll found. His ratings have risen by more than 10 points among both parties since he left office, with 84 percent of Republicans and 24 percent of Democrats now rating him favorably.

At Bush's lowest point, in 2008, just 32 percent of Americans rated him positively, according to Gallup. Like most recent presidents, however, he saw his numbers rise after leaving the White House.

Bush has largely stayed off the radar since he was president. When he made a public appearance for the dedication of his presidential library in April, several pollsters recorded the highest ratings for Bush in years, although most ratings were still net negatives.

Really not a surprise. Former presidents will always look and be treated better once they're out of the White House.

He's done the smart thing, stayed low profile and let time work its magic. Unlike his VP who keeps reminding everybody why he was so unpopular.

The only president I've never figured out why his numbers didn't change much was Nixon.

I'm waiting on why?

Is it because Obama is even worst at foreign policy and the economy? It feels like more of a default than approval but whatever.

A former president's legacy will never survive something like WaterGate and actually resigning from the Office of the President of the United States of America.

I can see a rational argument here because of resigning but not because of Watergate.

Watergate in comparison to Iran-contra or the Iraq war seems like child's play. Seems like there is a lurking variable other than watergate.

Didn't mean to hijack.

Well, it was the first, and so far only, such scandal to drive a president from office. Teapot Dome might have, but Harding conveniently died. And everybody knew Watergate was the tip of the iceberg. A lot of other stuff would have come out had there been an impeachment trial.

I agree with you that Iran-Contra and Iraq should have been bigger deals, but Reagan was called the Teflon President for a reason, and with Iraq, most of the Democrats in Congress were on record as voting for it too.

People tend to forget things as time goes by, and to forgive them. I still view Bush unfavorably. I view Clinton favorably, Obama unfavorably, GW unfavorably, and Reagan favorably.

Maybe its because the lying media dosen't have a reason to keep up their propaganda against him.

I believe he had the benefit of the doubt throughout his first term? I was glad to see the media challenge his policies in the 2nd term weren't you?

almost as pathetic as fabricating evidence to incite the american people to war and illegally spying on americans only to later fearmonger and get congress to make it legal.
