Years ago a future vice-president named Joe Biden and his crony Dan Lungren bulldozed their steroid control act through Congress, usurping almost every single qualification to schedule a drug.

quote:

But congress heard testimonies from experts from the American Medical Association, the Drug Enforcement Agency as well as numerous outside experts including professors, doctors, clinicians, and scientists, all of whom recommended AGAINST scheduling steroids

quote:

However, after two and a-half decades on the books, the law has proved to be an abysmal failure. What happened was that thousands of otherwise law-abiding Americans – not athletes, but mature adult males – have been arrested, arraigned, prosecuted, convicted, forfeited property, lost their jobs and their licenses, and sentenced to prison for the personal use of anabolic steroids.
Virtually none of them have been Olympic athletes or other pro athletes. They're not cheating in sports; they're not even playing sports. But they're the ones being dragged through the system by a law that was never intended for them.

Its a well known secret that most professional and Olympic athletes take some sort of PED. Only the stupid ones get caught. Should Steroids be legal to use by athletes and the public at large?

Not athletes. The whole point of athletic competition is to have as level a playing field as possible. I'm fine with people putting whatever they want in their body. But when it comes to athletics, there's solid reasoning behind having a ban in place.

Yes. It may not be steroids, but some sort of PED is being used by a majority of athletes.

I believe steroids have legit medicinal uses but to allow widespread street usage could open up a world of "designer" drugs with bad consequences. Folks go off the rails with the bootleg versions enough as it is.

Those already exist without steroids being legal. They're called peptides and they mess people up on the dai-ly.

How are you defining "PED?"

But more importantly, how are you defining "athletes?"

If we're talking athletes of all sports, ages, and levels, then no, a majority are not taking PEDs (not banned ones, at least).

If we're talking solely professional or Olympic athletes, I'd still be willing to bet that the ones not doping far outnumber those using banned substances.

I'm sure there are plenty who slip through the cracks and have found a way to game the system. But if someone has made it to the professional/Olympic level on their own talent, I doubt many would put that opportunity in jeopardy by taking banned substances.

That's kinda my point. People can't handle the shite that's on the street now so why allow the real mccoy to frick them up even worse? Have doctors administer as needed and any doctors over prescribing need to be dealt with through the court systems.

Yes. The government has no business telling you what you can and cannot do with your own body or what drugs should or shouldn't be legal.

For public use, I don't think they should be considered any differently than any other medical and health treatment, which is how I thought it was anyways.

In regards to sports, that's up to the sports and their regulating bodies (although many are corrupt). But if they do allow PEDS, they probably would have to ensure some limits, otherwise I can see some legal issues down the line.

Just a factoid for you younger folks. When steroids became popular in the 1960s with weight lifters the federal govt put out PSAs to HS kids saying "Steroids do not increase muscle. It's psychological."
What a load of crap.
