SB1142 would make participating in or helping organize a protest that turns violent a criminal offense under the state’s racketeering (RICO) laws.

Sweet so the next time the tea party protests something in Arizona, all I have to do is show up, break a window, then run off and all the tea party protestors will be arrested and charged with racketeering

Those tea party protests were famous for their violence... Oh, wait.

Preview of this thread: this is where all the so called "libertarians" show up and defend government overreach.

I have no issue with this in theory, the problem would come when peaceful protestors get charged for the actions of others.

Bad bill. Just because you organize an event doesn't mean you control the actions of the participants.

A big problem with stories like this is that one congressman drafts a bill like this, and the headlines make it seem like the entire state gov't is complicit.

Violent protests aren't protected by the 1st Amendment

If you and I go together to protest something and halfway through I decide to go bonkers for whatever reason, does that mean you should be arrested and charged for the crimes I commit?

This happens in more than just politics. When a news story about a student at a college doing something stupid surfaces, SEC Rant uses it to not only ridicule that college but also the entire state.

If some people are being violent, it doesn't mean the non violent ones should be lumped in with them.

Well it doesn't matter now, does it? All I have to do is infiltrate your group, become violent during the protest, and i take you all down with me.

Of course not, and I noted this issue above.

Please show us the exact language of the statute as it would be amended.

Something tells me that you cannot be arrested merely for participating in a protest that turns into a riot UNLESS you conspired to and participated in the actual riot.

I suspect that "summary" you provided is just more "fake news."

The violence in Berkley was endorsed by the event organizer. You know that. Still, I want you you to infiltrate a tea party group and test your theory.

What are you basing that on other than hopes and wants?

Also, why do I have to do your homework for you? Are you incapable of researching the language yourself?
