MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Senate has voted to allow a church to form its own police force.
Lawmakers on Tuesday voted 24-4 to allow Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Birmingham to establish a law enforcement department.
The church says it needs its own police officers to keep its school as well as its more than 4,000 person congregation safe.

Good for them. I wish the state legislature would be equitable when it comes to more local control and discretion, but I'll take a win whenever it's there.

Awesome. They'll probably get more protection than the gen. Public

Whats wrong with hiring a couple of security guards?

I'm sure you guys wouldn't be panicking if a mosk did this.

This most likely violates the Establishment Clause.
And it is a bad idea in general.

This could be for insurance purposes.

Which is what it would be

Dumbest thing I've ever heard. Just hire some security guards.

Not particularly a fan of the idea but there are two things in play here:
1. Birmingham - it doesn't surprise me.
2. Alabama Legislature - absolutely nothing surprises me.

It's common in Texas for the ISD's to have police. It protects the schools (even in off hours/days), patrols the school zones, directs traffic, and deals with other student issues.
Seems like a good idea if you can afford it. Insurance is one reason to make it official, plus security guards are usually outsourced.

Sounds like sharia law
Only because you are clearly a moron.
Under yesterday's ruling, in Alabama a Muslim church can also absolutely create a police force, one that comports to US law , which Sharia doesn't. Just as THIS church must comport with all US , and Alabama laws
You fricking idiot.

What's the problem?
If they form an accredited law enforcement agency I don't see the big deal.
My local community college has a police department and some church grounds are twice as large.

A bunch of megachurch pastors in Texas just jizzed, and afterward googled law enforcement supply outlets. That gold badge is gonna look sweet on the lapel of their $3000 suit.

I'm glad I live in New Orleans and not the South.

Critics of the bill argue that a police department that reports to church officials could be used to cover up crimes.
Agree with this sentiment
If the church wants to basically be their own precinct composed of officers that are all church parishioners, I've got no issue.
But they should report to the city police department, not the church.

Downtown Fort Worth (Sundance Square) has no Fort Worth police. It is completely managed by the private police department of Bass Enterprises, which owns most of downtown Fort Worth's properties.
