I'm sure this was posted somewhere but I just saw it for the first time--this is the ACLU's well-written response to Va Gov McAuliffe

It is the responsibility of law enforcement to ensure safety of both protesters and counter-protesters. The policing on Saturday was not effective in preventing violence. I was there and brought concerns directly to the secretary of public safety and the head of the Virginia State Police about the way that the barricades in the park limiting access by the arriving demonstrators and the lack of any physical separation of the protesters and counter-protesters on the street were contributing to the potential of violence. They did not respond. I can't keep up with the Charlottesville discussion on here because it has dominated the board for days. Has anyone posted or can someone post a complete timeline of events in Charlottesville, from July 8 forward? The ACLU touches on some of the permitting and lawsuit, but I haven't seen it laid out in timeline form.

The stuff that comes up on Google searches is reductionist and selective at best.
