A perspective from my mom on all this

Russian stuff.
She is an Army brat and my grandfather retired LTC and ran the spook division of the CID post war Italy hunting Nazi's and other crazy stuff. So she was raised through the cold war. Her view on all of this Russian stuff comes from that lense.
We were told for decades the Soviets were this huge thing to be afraid of. Their people had the best educations. They had the smartest scientists. All of this propaganda fell on its face the day the wall came down and all the world saw the reality behind the iron curtain. They were a mess. All of this now is no different, it is all propaganda trying to scare the people.

I mean, yeah, they had problems, but they were really smart and so were their scientists. That part isn't fiction.
