There has been much debate about the amount of lives saved due to Truman's decision about the invasion of Japan, but one thing is for certain: Humans now have the capacity to end life on this planet with immediate swiftness.
Whether or not we agree on the use of the atomic mechanisms, we should come together in unison and universally state that there should be an enormous reduction in the real weapons of mass destruction.
Nuke arsenal
We have an opportunity to lead the world with a reduction of our nuclear capacity.

Nuke arsenal
quote:
We calculate that more than 125,000 nuclear warheads have been built since 1945, with 53 percent of those weapons belonging to the United States, 44 percent to the Soviet Union and Russia—and only 3 percent to the other seven countries with nuclear arsenals. After peaking in 1986, global nuclear weapon levels have declined, as illustrated in Figure 2.
quote:
The United States possesses an estimated 7,700 intact warheads. This includes approximately 4,650 warheads in the Pentagon’s stockpile: 2,150 of these weapons are considered deployed on missiles or bases with operational launchers; the other 2,500 are spares centrally stored in reserve. We estimate that the Energy Department stores approximately 3,000 intact but retired warheads that are slated for dismantlement by 2022 at the Pantex Plant near Amarillo, Texas.
We have an opportunity to lead the world with a reduction of our nuclear capacity.

Hopefully your plan will pull us back from the brink of this inevitable nuclear war we are confronting

actually that ability had nothing to do with Truman's decision to bomb japan.

Do you even MAD bro?

"Mutual Assured Destruction" is what has prevented the use of nukes since 8/45.
If you draw down arsenals to where someone does not fear total destruction in retaliation for use, you will greatly increase the chances such weapons will be used.

why are you laughing?
the germans, and russians were both pursuing nuclear programs during the war.
You really think that if truman had decided NOT to bomb Japan that nukes wouldnt still be in a similar place today?
another delusional loon.

I worked in the nuke weapons industry for years and do not believe this at all. Most of the nukes that we now have are of the much smaller tactical type. You would be stunned if you knew just how few ICBMs we have with large warheads on them.

And for the record, there is no doubt in my mind that nukes are the ONLY reason there has not been a WWIII yet.

Pandora's box? The nuclear bomb has saved more lives than any other invention in human history.

Created our/the nukes in order to bomb Japan.
You really think that the lives saved from not invading Japan played no part in the decision?

The "enough nukes to destroy the world many times" thing is pure falsehood. Read a frickin book.

Even if that were true, what's your point?

The extras are for shooting at incoming asteroids and invading alien spacecraft. Watch a frickin movie for chrissakes.

I agree with you for the most part. However I also think the world has seen more of the lower level regional conflicts as a result of Nuclear Arsenals...
