I know the 3 major lines of service that the big 4 firms provide are audit, tax, and Assurance & advisory. My question is: what exactly is assurance and advisory?

I would say three lines are Assurance (Audit), Tax, and Advisory (everything else).

If that clears anything up

So assurance really is audit? Because I am really interested in forensic accounting which is lumped under advisory...but i have an opportunity to interview with ernst and young for an assurance internship. Just wanted to know exactly what that involves.

Auditing

The work is a grind, but what job isn't? You should get in a very good training program.

Probably worked in what would now be called the advisory aspect at AA. We did a lot of research, planning and risk analysis.

Hedge, to be honest. Take what you can get. You need to get into public accounting and get experience THEN specialize.

Go into your interview and show that you are ready to learn etc. Get on with the Big 4 and in a few years specialize in forensic. The chances of getting a job straight out of school in a specialized field like that ARE NOT great. With the economy in the shitter any job is a good job.

Don't go into the interview and talk about how you want to get into forensic. Get your offer start work and then start moving that way.

Just my advice.

Oh trust me i know that...plus pretty much everyone forensic accounting job i have seen requires about 3 years experience to begin with. I would be ecstatic just to get on doing some auditing type work; pay my dues/time and then get into the forensic aspect of it.

Yes... genesis is audit reports provide 'reasonable assurance'... they are broad to capture other attest functions that are not audits (agreed upon procedures etc...)

Get in the door as an audit monkey.... once you hit senior they will let you specialize... easiest route in my opinion.

I did an internship @ EY in Houston. It was pretty much bad arse. Good $, a good amount of intern events, and they treat you like a king.

And you could get assigned to audit the company I work for! What more could you want?
