Was anyone else surprised by the officiating at Auburn?

I was.

This was discussed in a couple of threads already, but it was a pretty well called game.
It would be nice to think the league is cleaning up its act in that department. Too early to tell, but we can always hope.

Must admit though,
when I saw that a guy named "Pen Wagers" was the lead official,
I thought BOHICA.

(artistic license: actually it's Penn Wagers)

not a single holding call on either team all night

i think they told them to let them play and they better not screw this game up again

honestly, the officiating has not been as bad as people keep harping on. I did think it was ironic that on the same day the LSU played @ Auburn, there was a "jumping on" penalty called on a FG during the NC State vs ECU game. You know the penalty that LSU fans claim has never ever been called again. That was at least the 3rd other time i have seen it called.

well the SEC has said they will never call it again and i think the rule says if you come down on your own player 1st it isnt a penalty

I had a feeling we might get a fair shake this time after all the controversy the last two times. I think there was a little more attention being paid to the officiating this time, so they might have wanted to avoid another fiasco like 2006.

The officiating was ok. Like someone already said, there was not a single holding penalty. I saw at least 3 holding penalties that should have been called.

The one where Chad Jones rushed and he got held especially chapped my arse. He still somehow got through.

Also, (I think it might have been on the pick-6 play, but I'm not really sure) on one play Auburn's defensive end had his entire head past the ball. He was clearly offsides, and Im pretty sure on one of the highlights they pointed it out.

If you've only seen it three times, you aren't watching much football. Which is strange because you obviously aren't spending much time paying attention to what LSU fans are saying about that call, either.

NOBODY says it has never been called again. The rule is still on the books and unchanged. It's never been called UNDER THOSE CIRCUMSTANCES again. The NCAA issued guidelines for the interpretation of the rule to address the situation that occurred in the 2004 LSU-Auburn game and make sure that it was not called UNDER THOSE CIRCUMSTANCES again.

But by all means please continue to bash LSU fans for no fricking reason.

Wagers was the ref in last year's game when the Barners thought he'd been bought off by waiving off an illegal formation penalty on Hester's td catch.

When LaFell scored the last TD I just stared blankly at the TV for 2 minutes waiting for the announcers to notice the flag that was surely thrown. I only started cheering after they kicked the PAT.

So yeah, I was pretty surprised.

You miss the whole point of "us bitching" about that call. The guy that got called for the "jumping on" penalty didn't affect the fricking play AT ALL. The damn Auburn kicker flat out missed the PAT and they got a second chance just because the ref felt like throwing his flag for some BS reason.

The announcers even said something about that Chad Jones play. I re-watched the game yesterday and they said how there should have been at least two flags on that play. One for holding and one for intentional grounding.

And I think the play your thinking of where the defenders entire head was past the ball was in the Saints-Broncos game. Lot of discussion about another blown call at mile high on ESPN yesterday.

I was like you looking for something like that but then again I thought maybe we left to much time on the clock. The Defense responded better in that one game than I can remember to adverse conditions.

It was a BS call, but the fact that it had no affect on the play is irrelevant. Many times a penalty does not affect of the play (i.e. not enough men on the line of scrimmage or a holding call away from the ball), but it is still a penalty and has to be called. Our problem with the call at Auburn was that it was a marginal call (i.e. could be argued either way) and dictated the outcome of the game.

It was better than other games in the past, but it still pissed me off that Auburn wasn't called for holding more often. Towards the end of the game it was really starting to get ridiculous. Ziemba should just quit football and join the WWF.
