Hot dog sauce
Posted by DownSouthTiger on 8/13/08 at 2:21 am00
I am making a big batch of hot dog sauce this weekend for a birthday party. Does anyone have a good recipe.

Mustard and Ketchup?
I have never heard of people making a certain 'sauce' for hotdogs other than basic condiments.

If you're putting BBQ sauce on them, I'd recommend Jack Miller's or Pig Stand.

yes people, hot dog sauce. The street vendors in NYC have it, so do places like Gray's Papaya, Papaya King, etc....the classic, old time hot dog joints.
It usually has onions, chili sauce, vinegar, maybe a little dash of hot sauce and something else from what i can tell. I love the stuff, and wish they had it down here.....or just wish they had good, simple hot dog stands. Spicy mustard and kraut or spicy mustard and sauce is the only way to eat the dogs. Save the ketchup for kids under 8 years old.

I know what your talking about. Always called it "red sauce".
Jack Miller's/Pig Stand BBQ sauce is a thin sauce with the bits of onions like the hot dog sauce, and makes for a good substitution.

I do not know what you mean by "hot dog sauce," but a hot dog should only be preparred 4 ways: mustard only, mustard and relish, chili and cheese, or bbq sauce.
Any other way is just wrong.

New York Vendor "Red Hots" Hot Dog Sauce
2 large onions (sliced thin and quartered)
1/3 cup bottled chili sauce.
1 tbsp. water.
1 tbsp. distilled white vinegar.
3/4 tsp. sugar.INSTRUCTIONS:
Pre-Heat Oven to 500†
On 14 X 14 inch square piece of aluminum foil, mix all ingredients together, stir until well blended.
Bring 2 opposite sides together and fold edges over 3 times; then fold ends over the top.
Bake in pre-heated oven for 30 minutes.
When sauce is completed, combine with favorite mustard on your hot dogs.
*NOTE: The sauce was/is cooked this way so that it can be stored and re-heated as needed, especially in/on the vendors carts/stands in New York City.ALTERNATE METHOD:
Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan.
Stir continually while bringing to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until thickened.

bbq sauce????? jesus.
so kraut is wrong? and hot dog sauce they have been using forever, probably before they were even popular in louisiana is wrong?
For a good hot dog chili I found a jar of chilidog mix at Alberson's which is in the Louisiana section because someone around here makes it. You mix with like two or three pounds of ground meat and simmer and it'll serve like 30 or so hot dogs. I had a chilidog party one afternoon just because I'm a sucker for buying stuff like that and invited all the neighbors. We all loved it. Get good Nathan's or Hebrew Nationals and good fresh buns though.
Hot dog party's are pretty cool.

The key. Avoid oscar meyer/bryan/ballpark like the plague.
I've always preferred skillet/griddle cooked dogs to grilled. If I'm firing up the grill, I'm cooking something better than hotdogs (except for the kids).
I like the Boarshead as well for grilling or skillet. However I mostly boil them since that is pretty much the southern way or at least the way I've had them most of my life. Don't get me wrong though, I'll grill as well. They tend to get a little greasy when grilling.
