I ate there last week while I was on vacation, good but pricy. Anyone else have that opinion?

That's not Destin, and yes it is pricy, but very good, esp. the crabcakes.

I've only been there to drink, but the food didn't seem especially pricy, for what folks were getting.

The Red Bar is what it is...very, very limited menu, but not that pricy. The Red Bar is all about atmosphere. I've never been a big fan of the place, but most people I know love it. IMHO there are much, much better places to eat in Grayton than the Red Bar.

It's in Grayton Beach, which is about 15 miles east of Destin. Many people feel (and I agree) that there is a distinct difference between a vacation spent in Destin, and a vacation spent in the beaches on 30-A 10 - 20 miles east of Destin.

Shhhhhh.

My favorite bumper sticker from that area said something like "Save 30A, send your friends to Destin."

I'm hoping that the lack of highrises on 30-A will serve to keep most folks out. We've been staying out there (Santa Rosa/Blue Mountain Beach area) for almost 10 years and it's stayed basically the same, crowd wise. The far end of 30-A (rosemary beach), though, is getting ridiculous.

I am assuming that in these areas you are either renting houses or cottages since there are no highrises?

houses...The cost, though, is basically the same as a destin condo especially if you get a large house and split among 2 -3 families. You get your own private beach, there are no crowds, and it's nice and quiet and relaxing.

We've stayed in Santa Rosa for the last 4 years and love it..... it's never going to get like destin, because there arent really any places to build high rises.

What are you looking for? House? Directly on the beach? Off the beach, but a little cheaper?

check out the Rivard website. It's a little less overwhelming than VRBO. Seagrove/Seaside is a little on the busy side for me. I prefer the Santa Rosa, Blue Mountain Beach, Grayton, Gulf Place stretch which is just before Seaside. Although, Watercolor is one of the nicest areas I've ever stayed. You can't stay on the beach in Watercolor, but all the other amenities more than make up for it.

Rivard is who you want to rent from. I stay in Seagrove even Seaside and Watercolors a couple of times a year. I stay in Sand Destin once a year as well. Both are great but different.

Try the paneed chicken at Red Bar. Good stuff.
