re: How much tax gets taken out of your check?Posted by TonyTheTiger504 on 6/6/08 at 4:55 pm to Powerman

I think I must have filed my taxes wrong or something. Year to date, the combined taxes have eaten up about 37% of my income and I'm not anywhere near being in the top tax bracket.
Does this sound like an unusually high number for someone with a pretty average income?
Also a marginal amount of my income is tax free per diem so it's probably a couple percentage points higher than 37
Man I really hate taxes
The IRS publishes withholding tables on its website. You can go and look up by marital status and number of exemptions and income what they should be withholding from your check.
California probably has a similar table on their website I would imagine.
Does LA County charge income taxes?

BTW powerman - one advantage of graduate school is you don't have to pay FICA tax out of your assistantship.
I have no idea why. I like it. Except every time I get a statement from the SS reminding me I have just as many quarters as I did 4 years ago.

aren't you the oldest living college senior in existence? Hell, I am pretty sure you are older than me (but not zach, he is like muthusla old).
Yeah...I just mentioned that in case it might affect my tax filing status. I haven't been claimed as a dependent since I graduated high school.

I can't figure out if it's county or city...I'll have to look it up. There is a section called "local" that gets deducted from my check. It's almost negligible compared to all the other shite but it still seems absurd to me.

Yeah...if you make over 44K or so you get taxed at 9% by the state...which is ridiculous because 44K over here is a pittance
