Sorry to sound like a gripe, but I quit watching WAFB sports after I noticed reporter and broadcaster Erin Coffield fooling with her camera and KNEELING to mess with it during the playing of the National Anthem behind home plate at one of the regional games. Has she lost her mind? Even the biggest, drunken fans for USM were standing up and paying tribute to the country they (and we) live in. This was an utter disgrace. Did anyone else notice her? It really stood out.

If she really needed to check film or do something with the camera, there are other more appropriate times to do this, considering during TV games they waste 6 minutes between innings and make the players stand around after warm-up pitches.

As videographer, I often try and tape the National Anthem and at baseball games I always try to get the "Play Ball" down on tape. Was the chick running the camera and shooting her own standup? If so, she's gotta alot shite on her mind dude.

Cut her some slack.

UH, she was probably setting her stuff up for her job. It's not like she was there just to watch the game...well maybe she was, but she was on the clock, I knew people in the military that would run inside to avoid having to stand at attention in the morning when they played the Nat. Ant.across the entire base! This is nothing major.

People covering or staging the game are outside the gameday activities. It's part of their job to be ready to shoot or carry out their duties at a moment's notice. This includes during the National Anthem, moments of silence, or any other sort of observation. If you have a moment to join the ceremony, fine. But you better not if you have something else to do.

Security guards don't take the national anthem off. The TV cameras don't take the national anthem off. Erin shouldn't take the national anthem off if she has work to do.

Now, I used to be a journalist for 10 years, and you can still see me on the sidelines at some LSU games shooting with my camera. I don't take the national anthem off. I'm usually getting shots of people observing the national anthem with my camera, or shooting whoever's performing the national anthem. I'm not actually observing the anthem. I don't feel like I'm doing anything wrong. If you think I am, then maybe you just don't understand the nature of journalism. Journalists are there to RECORD... not to participate.

If it offends you... I won't apologize. You'll just have to live with it.

A lot of people laugh at the concept of journalistic ethics, as though it's some sort of oxymoron. But we do have our own set of rules and code of behavior that we take very seriously.

When you go to a game, you get to cheer and boo and celebrate when your team wins. You get to observe the national anthem, sing the alma mater, and dress in purple and gold. Erin doesn't have that luxury, and neither do any of the other journalists at the game. Don't judge her by your standards of behavior... because she has her own ethical demands to meet at any given game.

Dude, are you serious? You act like she pulled a Chris Jackson or Raoul Machmouf or whatever he calls himself. Find something else to talk about. You must be bored. It's a beautiful day outside. Go do some yard work or something.

budgies,

If you were standing at attention, hand over your heart and eyes on the flag, how were you able to notice what Erin (who you said was behind home plate) and the USM fans (who were near the top rows behind the third base dugout) were doing? Sounds like you've got a case of wandering eyes during the national anthem instead of treating it as sacredly as you want everyone else to.

i really don't need to explain myself, as yes i was working and i was shooting.

i agree with marco, clearly you were not 'paying tribute to the country' if you were so concerned about my actions.

plus, i got my shots in the first half of the anthem, then stood and looked at the flag for the rest.

but whatevver. life could be worse. i could have so little to discuss that i come bash a girl just trying to do her job on a message board.

and to whoever asks, yes.. i shoot and shoot my own standups.

by the way. its cofiell. despite whatever big j says.
