MLive.com: U-M starts its pursuit of Miles

Martin gets permission to talk to LSU coach

The Ann Arbor News

The University of Michigan's search for a new football coach took its first significant step forward Wednesday night, as athletic director Bill Martin asked for, and received, permission to talk to Louisiana State University coach and former Wolverine player and assistant Les Miles about succeeding the retired Lloyd Carr.

LSU senior associate athletic director Herb Vincent told the New Orleans Times-Picayune that permission had been granted and Martin had agreed to wait until after Saturday's Southeastern Conference title game between the Tigers and Tennessee before talking to Miles.

Martin didn't return requests for comment, and a school spokesperson expected the school would have no comment on the news.

LSU athletic director Skip Bertman confirmed Wednesday night through spokesman Herb Vincent that his Michigan counterpart, Bill Martin, has officially requested permission to speak with Les Miles about becoming the next coach of the Wolverines.

Bertman requested that the meeting not take place until after LSU plays Tennessee Saturday for the SEC championship. Martin told Bertman he will comply.

Louisiana State coach Les Miles might have moved one step closer Wednesday to succeeding Lloyd Carr as Michigan's coach.

LSU granted U-M athletic director Bill Martin permission to talk with Miles about the job, LSU assistant AD Herb Vincent told the Free Press.

"Bill Martin called (LSU AD Skip Bertman) today and asked permission to talk to Coach Miles," Vincent said. "Bertman asked that (the Wolverines) wait until after the SEC championship game. They agreed to that."

Game on!

Michigan athletic director Bill Martin asked and received permission from LSU athletic director Skip Bertman via e-mail Wednesday morning to talk to LSU football coach Les Miles next week.

On Bertman's and LSU chancellor Sean O'Keefe's request, Miles' agent George Bass of Dallas flew to Baton Rouge Wednesday afternoon to discuss enhancements and pay increases to Miles' contract at O'Keefe's office.

"The Michigan athletic director and I are in agreement that they're not going to talk to Les until after the football game Saturday," Bertman said from his home Wednesday night.

Shortly after LSU football coach Les Miles said there was no news about his possible candidacy to become the next coach at his alma mater Michigan, LSU officials confirmed Michigan requested and received permission to meet with Miles about the opening.

Herb Vincent, LSU senior associate athletic director, said Wednesday night the school gave its approval for the meeting on condition that Michigan and its representatives not speak with Miles until after the Tigers play Saturday against Tennessee in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game.
MGoBlog: Miles Contacted By Michigan

These things rarely become public unless they're in the bag, so this is a strong indication Miles is a done deal. LSU is promising a counter-offer but unless they can suddenly be the program Bo built, it is unlikely to matter.

A significant number of people have sent in the same story: there is an old guard at Michigan strongly opposed to Miles' candidacy, while younger folk, big money donors, and those not as closely connected to the current regime support it. I get stuff from people on side A skeptical about Miles' chances; I get stuff from people on side B saying it's done. Like, done-done-done and going to be announced Monday. I lean towards the latter, and expect Miles will be the guy in a few days.

all this crap coming in the middle of a potential national championship season. let me re-phrase, this crap played a role in derailing our national championship season all of last week and will now derail our chances at only our 6th SEC title since 1970 ... the blood's on bertman's hands for going on the cheap to replace saban with a classless clown like this ...

ETA: it's kind of hypocritical to be pissed at saban for leaving but not miles if he does. saban knew better than to entertain offers in public at the end of the 2003 season ..

i don't care if it's his drippy, sappy dream job .. the fricking dufus has the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP sitting in the palm of his hand and went job shopping during THE most critical week of the season ... why people aren't just saying "frick this classless idiot" is beyond me !! he'll fall flat on his fricking face at michigan and won't even get an october sniff of a national title the rest of his career ... he is on the verge of parlaying minimal coaching talent into a $3 million a year salary ... why we aren't pissed about being a stepping stone is amazing ...

and why is his fricking buy out so goddamned low ??

cuz it was Skip doing the negotiating is why.

the same skip that sold us out on baseball when he hired Smoke.

the same skip that closed off parts of campus to parking to he could sell parking passes.

the same skip who negotiates low buyouts for games so we have this last minute crap of teams dumping us for better games.

and you are surprised?

Classless? You may not like Miles as a coach but you're the first person I've ever heard use the term 'classless' about him.

Everyone knew that Miles would leave for UM if the job opened up.

not at all ...

mark emmertt knew better than to let joe dean have anything to do with the hiring of dinardo's replacement and that is why we wound up with saban ... god knows who raycom would have told joe to hire ... unfortunately, skip will do the hiring againt because our drunk NASA chancellor has no fricking clue ...

dude -- the fricking timing is ATTROCIOUS !! we've all had to turn down "dream" opportunities in life because the timing wasn't right and common sense and decency told us that ... yes this guy is classless because he bit the hand that fed him and is selling out his players ... er .. nevermind .. he didn't recruit 80 percent of them ... the dude is DAMN fricking classless .. how can you say Miles is showing class right now ??????????

Miles did not choose the timing. Carr and Michigan chose the timing.

And I am sure that if your dream job came along you would say "Sorry, I have this big project going on, the timing is just bad"

You crack me up...Miles had nothing to do with the timing. He hasn't even been to UM yet. He doesn't get to talk to UM until after Saturday.

I think Miles would be fricking moron to blow this opportunity off...it's the last chance he'll have to coach at his alma mater and he's handled everything fine up to now.

he isn't going to talk to michigan his AGENT is and his AGENT has been talking to michigan at miles commission ... the deal's done .. the only reason michigan has asked for permission is because miles has to personally ink the deal ... miles will be named the head coach on monday morning .. that's a given ..

so you enjoy basically being a fricking stepping stone and letting this clown hold your national championship season hostage at all costs ?? he could have handled it well two weeks ago by taking his name out of consideration and focusing on what may be his only chance at a ring .. it's not like we have a trophy case busting with crystal balls ...

you obviously dont know too much tigahrag, because skip isn't doing the search, neither is o'keefe, it's the president....Lombardi. And you calling Miles classless, when he is anything but, shows your ignorance.

Miles is now going to be forever vilified in LSU sports history as the coach who blew a shot at a MNC because he was more focused on his "dream job" and allowing Pelini to chase his dream job, than he was on preparing the team for the task at hand.

I feel really sorry for the kids on the team. The upperclassmen who have stayed with the program for 4-5 years waiting for this opportunity deserve way better than this.

He better hope he gets the UM job. He may not be able to stay in Baton Rouge if Tennessee blows out a flat Tiger team on Saturday.

so, just bc we lost the last game, (basically you could look at a couple plays, had they gone the other way, we would've won)you think miles is the reason, he didn't prepare enough? You are a joke man, real joke.

I highly doubt it's a done deal. Anyone have access to LSUs financial records? Did we receive a $1.25 M giant check?

that man brought LSU to baseball glory. you haven't doen anything for the school. so i will take skip's side on that issue.

this would of happened reguardless with TAF. and i highly doubt the atheltic director has the say so on campus parking.

again, not even his job.

you seem to have a hard on about bashing skip bertman while under his supervision LSU has seen it's greatest years in all sports including football, baseball (while coaching), track, gymnastics, women's basketball, a couple lil bright spots with men's basketball, etc.

bertman is part of the reason you're here. if LSU atheltics weren't up, the discussion would be low and you may not of found tigerdroppings. so damn you skip bertman. damn you for bringing us prplhze2000.
