The God of War Franchise

Much like Shakespearean fiction, the formula and mechanics made famous by this franchise have been beaten to death over the years to the point of where I'm obviously unable to judge this franchise fairly.
Perhaps I shouldn't have even judged the franchise on the back of a single game, but I picked up the God of War Saga at Gamestop because I thought this was a franchise I should try.
I think this may be the most tedious, derivative game filled with some of the most frustratingly poorly designed encounters I've ever played in my life. Gameplay is essentially pressing Square, Square, Triangle over and over hoping you aren't interrupted mid combo by a monster, beating waves and waves of them (who all take forever to kill) every time you enter a room, solving a dumb block puzzle and watching a cutscene.
I feel like I should judge it based on the time period it was released. In terms of graphics, this game must have been impressive on the PS2, but honestly, Devil May Cry which was released in like 2001 is far more fun and engaging than this game.
It also doesn't help that the HD re-release seems half-assed. I may have been spoiled by KH 1.5 and 2.5, but this game looks like the PS2 game upscaled to 720p then stretched across a 1080p display even though it advertises 1080p on the box.

It's a good example of what happens when you don't play it near launch. I'm in the same boat with it. I played 1 and 2 in the last year and wasn't crazy about it. I imagine those graphics were amazing back in its time though. Also, kratos is a douche bag.

I played the first two when they came out and thought they were amazing. The stories were epic, controls were great, graphics were great, just awesome games all around. I grew up playing beat em ups like Streets of Rage and Golden Axe and these games seem like a modern update of that formula. One of the reasons I want to get back into PS is to play the rest of these games.

I just started the series not to long ago as well. I started with Chain of Olympus and then went to the first God of War. The game is ok not great. The camera sucks and when I die it puts me back in a place that I don't have any health. After I finish I am taking a break from GOW. Then come back to Ghost of Sparta, GOW II, and GOW III. Its not a terrible game, but when I play I am like man I could be playing something a lot better.

Every action game can be oversimplified if cynical enough. I haven't played them in a while, but I really did enjoy the series.
What all came with the Saga release?

I think it really went off the rails.
The first and second game are amazing, the third is very disappointing and Ascension was enjoyable and a step up from 3, but that wasn't saying much.

I got the saga and 1, 2, and the mobile games aged pretty poorly. 3 was epic and awesome, but I had marathoned the whole series and was tired of it by the end, so I can't remember much. All blended together.
I remember being blown away by 1 when I was a kid

And upon replaying DMC1 with the HD collection, I was shocked by how little I enjoyed it. Mind blowing as a kid, but so meh now. I beat it in 4.5 hours and was shocked. 3 really was the highlight. Near perfect game.

I played it when it first came out and felt the same.....that said I still buy and love every iteration of Dynasty/Samurai Warriors........

Gameplay is essentially pressing 'B' over and over hoping you aren't interrupted mid combo by a monster, beating waves and waves of them (who all take forever to kill) every time you enter a room, solving a dumb block puzzle and watching a cutscene.
I liked the first 2 games at release. They had a sense of scale to them that games just didn't have at the time and the camera angles given to the player for enemy encounters were far better than the aforementioned "Devil May Cry" (which I also enjoyed at release). The combat can be really simple if you stick with the same combo but you also have the option to change it up. Admittedly, the game should do something to encourage or require you to change up your combat strategy, but you have the option to approach combat like you want.
The first game laid down a good foundation, but 2 is far better. There are more weapons, more interesting enemies / bosses, and the abilities you acquire amplify the combat. I also liked the story better in 2 since Kratos and the player have an aligned goal - to get revenge on Zeus for betraying you and stealing your powers. I had a lot of trouble caring about Kratos at all in the first one since nearly every problem he faced was his own fault.
I just thought 3 was okay and I haven't played any GOW since that one. I'm not enthusiastic about the rumored PS4 title.

Ascension had some good moments, but it was worse than 3. GOW3 was probably the best game, with GOW2 being my favorite.

This is why KOTOR is the GOAT game. It is still fun to play today 12 years after it was made.

I especially enjoyed the part where you fight the enemy and you can only see both your silhouettes. Made for a memorable gaming moment and one of the few times I actually felt some sympathy for Kratos.

Huh? Don't remember this. May have been high

**GOW2 Spoilers**
After Kratos crawls out of the underworld, he discovers there is a lone spartan still alive after Zeus's betrayal. Kratos orders him to go defend Sparta and wait for his return. Later in the game, you encounter a silhouetted enemy and kill him, only to discover it was the last Spartan from earlier. Just before dying, the last Spartan tells Kratos Zeus destroyed Sparta in Kratos's absence but he was hoping to gain an audience with the sisters of fate to turn back time, which is the same thing Kratos is trying to do. So, he ends up dying by the hands of the person he was trying to honor.
It was memorable to me and it showed some nice consequences for Kratos of his raged-filled, wanton killing spree.

GOW2 was fantastic. Probably my favorite in the series.

I only played GOW3 for PS3, which I enjoyed. I typically dont like button-mashers, but they had so many epic boss fights in that game, I didnt mind at all.
