do the blood work, do the radiographs, do a physical exam and figure out what's wrong. If they do a CBC, Chem Panel, chest and abdominal radiographs and proper physical exam then they can end up saying "I dunno" instead of just starting with that as the first answer.

relatively rapid onset of severe lethargy is not necessarily a death sentence or irreversible and don't accept that as a starting point for any conversation. yes, the prognosis is worse with older dogs and recovery might be more complicated or less likely... but it is still possible this is something you can at least temporarily fix.

Hope you don't feed him beneful from purina. My brother fed his dogs that food. One dog one year old one dog 12 years old. Both dead within 2 weeks.

Same symptoms you describe.

I'm not a vet, but my dog went through a similar situation. He was diagnosed with failing kidneys. We did all we could, but in the end we ultimately had to put him down. One day he was happy go lucky and the next day he barely ate and became very lethargic. On top of that when I tried to pick him up he snapped at me and wimpered in pain. We ran a number of test and decided there was no reason to prolong the suffering. It was a tough week. Sorry for your loss my friend.

I recently had a conversation about this with my vet. He said that pick three characteristics that define your dogs personality, such as eating, playful, fetching, etc. once the dog loses two of the three characteristics then it is time to put the dog down.

Good Luck

I agree with molsusports. Really need some diagnostics in order to reach any diagnosis or prognosis. Lethargy and weakness could be any number of things. I have had patients with full blown cancer come in wagging their tails and patients with gastroenteritis come in completely unresponsive. So until you get some diagnostics don't make any decisions. Post bloodwork and X-rays and I'll give you my opinion. Can you comment on pets temp, pulse, or respiratory rate. Gums pink or pale.

If the vet hasn't checked for Canine parvovirus, then you need to go somewhere else now. The symptoms you described are identical to those of my own dog no more than six months ago and that's what it was. Dog ended up dead anyway after a lengthy stay at the vet. That's a story for another thread.

Parvo in a vaccinated 12y/o dog is highly unlikely

They are keeping him overnight. I'm ok with that ( besides being home now and the weird feeling of him not being here ). I'm picking him up at 7:30am. After trying to convince us to "put him down" 20 minutes after arriving we finally had them do the blood work and X-rays. They found nothing and actually apologized for condemning him only due to his age. They are now going to sedate him and keep him overnight and have recommended that we take him to a dog/pet dentist due to X-rays that they think show an abscesed (sp?) tooth. They told us that if that is the case it could definitely cause the high fever , and lethargic state. So now we just try to get thru the night without him and round 2 begins in morning. I'm feeling better as he definitely wanted to come home with us. Thanks to everyone for the conversation and I'll update tomorrow . Hopefully with a story about overreacting due to having an awesome dog who wants to live along time. (cheers)

No bites. No sores. Nothing like that. I'm hoping they are right with the tooth issue. He did have to have one pulled almost 2 years ago and it did cause him to struggle to eat but he never got lethargic like now. I mean....he doesn't even want to stand up or he can't. I had to carry him to the car , into the vet, etc.

Hope he's okay. I mentioned the tick thing because if one gets along the spine it can cause paralysis pretty quickly, much like you described if your dog can't get up and walk, it's also an often overlooked cause. Seen it happen several times.

I would find a different vet if this is how they diagnose issues. I know that is not your normal vet, just reinforces to me a 2nd opinion. Good luck.

If this is really how it went down then I agree. I know when emotions run high you aren't always hearing what was actually said.

Forgive me for being naive but can dogs ( mutts ) live much longer than 12 - 14 yrs and be healthy and happy? I know some people will spend a fortune to keep a dog alive ( and today I finally understand that logic (a bit) ) but is just more or less pressuring the dog at the pint to stay alive. Obviously I don't want to lose him but more importantly I don't him to suffer due to our decisions. I know I'm going on and on but frick this sucks. This is my first , and only dog , as an adult and this is killing me. Thanks for listening/reading.

Just being honest, but I think most vets would tell you that you were very fortunate to get this much life out of him.

12 x 7=84

Sounds like he has run his race. Take care of him and yourself.

Get a couple different opinions before making any permanent decisions.

We had a litter of pups back in november, and something happened to an eye of one of the pups, there was a small pink speck in the middle of the eye. Took them to a local vet that is mainly for vet students to learn, not the most reputable vet either, said that it had gotten scratched and was blind in that eye, and the eye had to be removed. Got another opinion from a better vet clinic, and that vet just gave him some eye drops, he can see fine now.

Moral of the story, get a few opinions before doing anything! Hope your buddy gets well!
